5 th Grade Parent Night March 7 th , 2019

Tonight’s Purpose  You will learn about life as a student at Tolt.  You will learn how we transition students into Tolt.

Tolt Staff  We love middle school students.  We love our community.  We want students to love Tolt.

Tolt Students  Come from all 5 Riverview elementary schools (Carnation, Cherry Valley, Stillwater, ERMA and PARADE) .  6 th grade is the first time this graduating class will all be together.  About 790 students in grades 6-8.

Tolt Why To develop an inclusive community of critical and creative thinkers who practice resiliency, show empathy, and take initiative for learning.

While in Middle School  Students go from being more “child - like” to “adult - like” – it’s a time of intense growth.  Students discover their sense of self and become more independent.

Characteristics of Middle Schoolers  Middle schoolers are focused on themselves.  Middle schoolers prioritize their peers over adults.  Middle schoolers change their interests frequently.

Characteristics of Middle Schoolers  Middle schoolers are idealistic and see the world of just and unjust.  Middle schoolers tend to exaggerate.  Middle schoolers are curious.

How Parents Can Help  Stay involved! Check grades in Skyward.  Help students with organization and time management.  Encourage your student to help others.

Our Daily Schedule  Six classes  4-minute passing time (no lockers)  Three mixed grade lunches

6 th Grade Classes  Math 6, Advanced Math 6, or Pre-Algebra  Language Arts 6 or Pre-Honors Language Arts 6  Social Studies 6  Science 6  PE-PE-Tech-Art Rotation  Elective

Electives  Concert Choir  Debut Band  Premier Band  Strand: 4 quarter-long electives  Reading Empowerment, Math Empowerment, or Learning Lab

Empowerment Classes  For students who would benefit from additional math or reading support  Students are with the same teacher two periods a day  Families are notified over the summer

Transportation During the last week in August, look up bus stop information by Tyler Tech e-link on the RSD webpage under Transportation.

Health Info All current 5 th graders must have  all of their immunizations current and a certificate of immunization status turned in before school starts. Please ask our nurse questions  about forms, immunization requirements and to set-up health plan meetings for next school year.
