  2. We extend a warm welcome to everyone, and especially any visitors who may be worshiping with us to- day. If you do not already have a church home, please feel welcome to join this Parish family. In the Episcopal Church, all baptized persons are welcomed to the table to receive Holy Communion. Our Services begin with the Opening Voluntary. You are invited to enter quietly into the spirit of worship as the music is played. PLEASE SILENCE YOUR CELL PHONES. W E CELEBRATE THE F EAST OF THE P RESENTATION OF C HRIST IN THE T EMPLE TODAY , TRANSFERRED FROM YESTERDAY , F EBRUARY 2. Both of our services today will begin with the “Candlemas” procession. That name arises from the tradition of blessing all the candles to be used throughout the year on this day. The Feast of the Presentation commemorates the 40th day after Jesus’ birth, when he was presented in the Jerusalem Temple and Mary was purified in accordance with Jewish Law. (Leviticus 12:8) The story of the Presentation of Jesus is found in the Gospel of Luke which is read today. This statement from a parish bulletin of the Church of England perfectly summarizes the season: The season of joyful celebration which begins at Christmas continues through the successive Sundays of Epiphany and the festal cycle ends only with the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, or Candlemas (2 February). The child who has been manifested to the Magi at his birth is now recognised by Simeon and Anna when he comes to be presented in the Temple according to the Law of Israel. He is both ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles’ and ‘the glory of God’s people Israel’. But the redemption he will bring must be won through suffering: the Incarnation is directed to the Passion; and Simeon’s final words move our attention away from the celebration of Christmas and towards the mys- teries of Easter. T HE F OOD P ANTRY is in need of restocking! Any appropriate food items (non-perishables and canned goods) are most welcomed. As always, thank you for your generosity. M USIC AT S T . 5. 323 23 8 The congregation is provided with unlighted candles. A server holds the Celebrant’s lighted candle until the procession begins. The congregation stands facing the celebrant. The Celebrant greets the people with these words Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord. People Thanks be to God. The following canticle is said by the congregation as the candles are lighted from the Celebrant’s candle. They should remain lighted until after the Collect of the Day. A Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel. Lord, you now have set your servant free* to go in peace as you have promised. A Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel. For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior,* whom you have prepared for all the world to see. A Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel. The Celebrant then says the following prayer Let us pray. God our Father, source of all light, today you revealed to the aged Simeon your light which enlightens the nations. Fill our hearts with the light of faith, that we who bear these candles may walk in the path of goodness, and come to the Light that shines for ever, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Procession Celebrant Let us go forth in peace. People In the name of Christ. Amen. — 5 —

O God, you have made this day holy by the presentation of your Son in the Temple, and by the pu- rification of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Mercifully grant that we, who delight in her humble readiness to be the birth-giver of the Only-begotten, may rejoice for ever in our adoption as his sisters and brothers; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. — 6 —
