Bennett Residence • Constructed in 1937 • Designed by Hans Carl Berchten-Breiter, a German architect • Noted as an example of Streamline Moderne style of Art Deco architecture • Identified “support” category heritage resource • An application to demolish the house has been received 2909 MATHERS AVENUE
Assessment • A structural report and a heritage report indicate that the condition of the house is poor. • Significant repair and/or re-construction required due to signs of water ingress resulting in mold growth & wood rot and settlement of the structure. • Significant alterations have been made since originally constructed. • Heritage restoration would be challenging as the original plans not available to guide restoration. • Low relative heritage value 2909 MATHERS AVENUE
Legislation • Under the LGA a local government may delay the issuance of demolition permit for a period of 60 days if the local government considers that the property is or may be heritage property. 2909 MATHERS AVENUE
Recommendation • Due to low remaining heritage value of the home staff do not recommend applying temporary protection of the Bennett Residence. 2909 MATHERS AVENUE
