Hullabaloo U – First Year Experience • Designed to help new students transition to Texas A&M • Weekly 1-hr meetings in groups of <25 students during Fall term • Led by faculty or staff, with participation by peer mentor(s) • Meetings will cover many important topics critical for your success • All first-time students at Texas A&M are expected to participate • Most of you will do so in Departmental sections of SCEN289

“3-for-1 Rule” 1 HOUR IN CLASS / WEEK = 3 HOURS STUDYING OUTSIDE OF CLASS/WEEK if your goal is to earn a “B” (4 hours for an “A”) TYPICAL SCHEDULE: MATH (4 HOURS IN CLASS / WEEK = 12 HOURS STUDYING OUTSIDE OF CLASS/WEEK) ENGLISH (3 HOURS IN CLASS / WEEK = 9 HOURS STUDYING OUTSIDE OF CLASS/WEEK) HISTORY (3 HOURS IN CLASS / WEEK = 9 HOURS STUDYING OUTSIDE OF CLASS/WEEK) SCIENCE (4 HOURS IN CLASS / WEEK = 12 HOURS STUDYING OUTSIDE OF CLASS/WEEK) = 14 HOURS IN CLASS/WEEK + 42 HOURS STUDYING/WEEK 56 HOURS/WEEK of Academic Work FOR 14 CREDITS!!!!!!
Grade Access • Mid-term grades are provided electronically through Howdy until a student has completed 30 hours at Texas A&M • Important for advising purposes to Q-drop, withdraw, etc. • Parental access to grades can only be granted by completing the “Certification of Dependency” Form: http://registrar.tamu.edu/Registrar/media/REGI_Forms/ Dependency_Certification.pdf
“Closet Majors” A UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM VIOLATION!! – Student Rule 1.5.1 Students must register for courses that follow the degree program of their declared major to prevent a registration block. Calculating Grade Points & Deficits 1. Grade points are calculated by multiplying the number of hours per course by the numerical value given for each grade (on a 4.0 grade scale) 2. Grade point deficits are calculated by weight, with a C at zero Example: Course Hours Grade Grade Points Total Grade Grade Point per hour Points Deficit BIOL 111 4 A 4 16 +8 – CHEM 119 4 C 2 8 MATH 147 4 D 1 4 -4 – – – KINE 199 1 S ENGL 104 3 F 0 0 -6 Overall 15 28 -2 28 Grade Points/15 Hours = 1.87 GPA
Academic Standing • Good Standing: • 2.0 each semester • 2.0 cumulative • 2.0 in courses for you r major • Academic Warning: • a semester GPA less than 2.00, but cumulative and major GPA 2.00 or above • Probation: • Major and/or Cumulative GPA less than 2.00 • Grade point deficit between -1 and -7 • Removal: • Two consecutive warnings (two semesters with GPA below 2.00) • -8 (or worse) grade deficit – either cumulative or in major courses • Failure to meet terms of probation from previous semester • Students can be removed from the College and/or TAMU after one semester!!!
Degree Requirements • All students must complete at least 36 hours of 300/400-level courses at TAMU, 12 hours of which must be within the major • Make sure advisors are aware of any transfer credit/credit by exam you have earned • Includes dual-credit from high school, AP, IB, etc. • catalog.tamu.edu/undergraduate/general-information/admission/#coursecredittext • May be equivalent to TAMU courses, using TX common course numbering system • catalog.tamu.edu/undergraduate/appendices/texas-common-course-numbering-system • May transfer by title • May not transfer The GPA of courses earned elsewhere has no impact on TAMU GPA
University Excused Absences Student Rule 7: student-rules.tamu.edu/rule07 • Participation in an activity appearing on the university authorized activity list • studentactivities.tamu.edu/resources/authorized-and-sponsored-activities-calendar/ • Injury or illness that is too severe or contagious for the student to attend class • Death or major illness in a student’s immediate family • Illness of a dependent family member • Participation in legal proceedings or administrative procedures that require a student’s presence • Religious holy day; active military service; pregnancy; presentation of research at professional conferences; mandatory job/grad school interviews; … Excused absences always require verifiable documentation
