Short history of the Alabama Greece Initiative • 2010 and 2012. Brief study abroad programs for students were organized by professors from the College of Arts and Sciences in cities of Greece as Dr. Tatiana Summers (Modern Languages & Classics)and Dr. Russell McCutcheon (Religious Studies). Professor and Dean Robert Olin funded the UA Department of Religious Studies to bring two Greek doctoral students to Tuscaloosa for one semester (Vaia Touna and Spyros Perakis) to work as Instructors with UA faculty members. ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI 17
2011 Two Professors from AUTh were invited for lectures to UA : • Angeliki Ziaka – Lecture “ Muslim Presence in Greece “, and • Danae Stefanou – Lecture: “ Improvising Greece “ And a “Greece and Global Culture Symposium” on “the relation of Greek culture to other areas of the world” was organized in cooperation with Tatiana Summers (Modern Languages & Classics), David Michelson (History), Richard Richards (Philosophy), Robert Mellown (Art & Art History). Summer 2011: Visit of Tatiana Summers to AUTh and discussion on establishing collaboration between our Universities. Preparation of the visit of Dean Olin next year. • May 2012 Visit to AUTh of Dean Robert Olin and Associate Dean Luoheng Han. Meeting with senior administrators and productive discussions on setting up a formal collaboration between the two Universities. • April 2013 Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between University of Alabama and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki • Summer 2013. Visit of Tatiana Summers to AUTh discussions for the future of our collaboration, preparation of the 1 st Alabama – Greece Symposium at AUTh • The story keeps going on, due to the generous support, vision and inspiration of Dean Robert Olin.
