2019-2020 World Language Proficiency Testing Student Presentation and Information
WL Assessment Information • Tests students’ ability to read, write, understand, and speak the language • Students can earn up to 4 high school elective credits • The first test for each student is free and paid for by the Foundation for Edmonds School District
Last Year’s Results ● 405 students were tested ● 1,195 credits were earned. ● Average of 2.95 credits earned per student ● 48 different languages were tested ● 116 students earned the Seal of Biliteracy
Available Tests for Multiple Languages • Avant STAMP 4S • Avant World Speak • Washington Association for Language Teaching (WAFLT) • ALTA Language Services Note: Each test is available in a variety of languages. All languages are available.
Avant STAMP Test • Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish • Reading, writing, listening and speaking testing is all done on the computer • While untimed, the testing takes about 2-4 hours
Avant World Speak Test • Amharic, Armenian, Chin (Hakha), Czech, Filipino (Tagalog), Haitian-Creole, Hmong, Ilocano, Marathi, Samoan, Somali Maay Maay, Somali Maxaa, Tamil, Telugu, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese, Yup’ik • Reading, writing, listening and speaking testing is all done on the computer • While untimed, the testing takes about 2-4 hours
WAFLT Test • Ewondo, Fulani, Fijian, Georgian, Icelandic, Krio, Luganda, Mandinka, Marshallese, Mongolian, Pohnpeian (Micronesian), Tongan • Timed Paper and Pencil written Test – 90 minutes • Speaking test on the computer - untimed
ALTA Language Services Test • Albanian, Amharic, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cambodian (Khmer), Chuukese, Farsi – Dari, Fulani, Fulani with Guinea Dialect, Georgian, Greek (Modern), Hungarian, Indonesian, Korean, Lithuanian, Nepali, Persian Farsi, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazil), Punjabi Eastern, Romanian, Swahili, Tamil, Thai, Tigrinya, Turkish, Twi, Ukrainian, Urdu, Wolof • Timed Paper and Pencil written Test – 60 minutes • Phone interview speaking test scheduled later if student scores well on written test.
Are you Ready? Many of the tests require students to select from answers • that are written in English Students must be proficient in Reading, Writing, Listening, • and Speaking in the target language to be tested in order to be successful on the assessment If either of these requirements will present an issue, • students may want to continue to work on developing their language skills and test the following year
