Who We Are: Over Sixty Years of Community Philanthropy in the Geelong Region History • 1954 - Geelong and District Community Chest • 1979 - United Way Geelong Region • 2011 - Give Where You Live Inc. Today • Leading philanthropic organisation in Geelong region (City of Greater Geelong, Borough of Queenscliff, Surf Coast Shire, southern portion of Golden Plains Shire) • reducing education, income and health disadvantage • Raising over $60 million dollars to meet the needs of the community.

What We Do : Reduce Disadvantage in Geelong Health and Live and Learn Survive and Wellbeing Thrive t o provide educational to improve social to contribute to opportunities as a basic levels of inclusion and pathway out of economic security access and disadvantage including food physical and shelter, pharmacy • School readiness mental health and household • Disengaged young • Healthy Aging people goods • Living with a disability • Education training • Homelessness and • Reducing risky choices and/or employment housing support • Life crises pathways • Financial skills and ongoing financial strategies • Regional emergency relief and basic food security

Why We Do It: Community Need • Three areas of Greater Geelong (Corio, Norlane and Whittington) have been identified as being in the 1 st decile (i.e. the most disadvantaged communities) based on SEIFA data. (ABS, April 2013) • Four areas of Geelong have been identified as “Red alert localities” in the Employment Vulnerability Index (EVI) Corio, Norlane, Newcomb and Moolap. These are communities are considered amongst Australia’s most disadvantaged places to live. (EVI, Nov 2013) • The Geelong region experiences higher rates of chronic disease and risk factors (obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity, alcohol & tobacco consumption rates); lower life expectancies, higher levels of crime against individuals and higher proportions of people with mental health behavior and mood problems than the state average (2011, G21) • Almost 20% of individuals or families consider themselves food insecure in the Geelong region (COGG 2012)

  7. 2015 Community Contributions In 2015 we expected to contribute $1.5-2M to the Geelong Region through: • Feed Geelong Grants • Building an Effective and Efficient Food Assistance System Grant • 2015 Grant Round Grants (Community, Capital Works and Equipment, Innovation and Capacity Building Grants) • Direct Assistance Voucher (DAV) Program • GROW (Geelong Region Opportunities for Work) • Strategic Grantmaking

  8. 2015 Grant Round: Eligibility We fund charitable organisations We do not fund: • that have: Individuals • Clinical or medical research • Tax Concession Charity (TCC) and • Endowment Funds • Deductible Gift Recipient Item 1 • Conferences or fundraising events (DGR1) status and • Retrospective or duplicated funding Whose proposed projects impact the • Programs that discriminate or create Geelong region: community conflicts • City of Greater Geelong; • Auspicing (the organization applying • Surf Coast Shire: MUST be the one undertaking the • Borough of Queenscliff; project or program) • southern Golden Plains Shire and • Previous grant recipients who have not Whose proposed projects overcome: completed reporting and acquittal • Health; requirements • Education; • Specific exclusions for a nominated • or Income disadvantage as defined by Grant Round or Category our Program Areas

  13. 2015 Grant Round: Innovation Grants • 2 year Grants - $70,000 a year ($140,000 over the two years) • 4 Step Process 1. Telephone consultation to endorse suitability 2. Expression of Interest Application 3. Full Application (by invitation only) 4. Presentation to Grant Advisory Group • Expressions of Interest Due Wednesday, March 25 (3pm)

  14. Important Elements of the 2015 Grant Round • Grant application submission calendar • Online application process • Right sizing of applications • Right sizing of expectations • Criteria more heavily weighted to Community Need (25%) and Evaluation and Impact (35%)

What Makes a Good Application Need – 25% • Provided quantitative evidence (numbers) • Told us where the evidence came from • Provided qualitative evidence (stories, testimonies) • Made a connection to the Geelong region • Connected what they wanted to do to how it would meet the need they had identified • Clearly impacted disadvantage (Health, Income, Education)

  16. What Makes a Good Application Organisational Capacity – 20% • Identified who would implement the outlined activity and their capacity/qualifications • If involved partners, roles were defined and provided evidence of support for the application

  17. What Makes a Good Application Budget and Financial Information – 20% • Provided clarity about other funding needed and its status • Demonstrated sustainability (project or benefits) • Demonstrated appropriate financial management

  18. What Makes a Good Application Evaluation Planning and Acquittal – 35% • Clearly defined impact (numbers and stories) • Identified evidence to be collected • Identified tools to be used to collect evidence • Clearly impacted disadvantage (Health, Income, Education)
