  4. Population data : United States = 2011 Canada and Québec = 2012 4

  5. Hydro power sites > 200 MW 5

  6. Nuclear generating sites > 200 MW 6

  7. Natural gas generation power sites > 200 MW 7

  8. Oil ‐ fired generation power sites > 200 MW 8

  9. Coal ‐ fired power generating sites > 200 MW Coal is the main world resource used to generate electricity. In 2012, more than 40% of the world power generation was derived from coal ( International Energy Agency, Key World Energy Statistics, 2012). 9

  10. Wind power sites > 200 MW In Québec, one site is > 200 MW : Gros ‐ Morne in Gaspesia (211.5 MW) 10

  11. Power generation data for year 2011. Figures present the various generating options expressed in terawatthours (TWh). 1 TWh is equal to 1 billion of kWh. Percentage of electricity generation produced with renewables: United States = 12% Canada = 63% Québec > 97% 11

  12. United States, China, Germany and Spain are the four world leaders in wind power. All four produce more than 65% of the world wind electricity generation. Percentage of wind energy in total electricity generation in those countries varies between 15% for Spain and 2% for China. 12

  13. Orange arrows represent prevailing winds in summer. Those winds blow mainly from the southwest towards the northeast, carrying atmospheric emissions from thermal power plants. 13

  14. Electricity from hydropower and nuclear plants produces very low levels of greenhouse gases (GHG). GHG from electricity generation in Québec and in Vermont are similar, in terms of g of CO 2 eq. emitted per kWh produced, and are the lowest in Canada and in USA. In Canada, the lowest GHG emissions from the electricity sector are found in Québec. In USA, it’s in Vermont that GHG emissions from the electricity sector are the lowest. In Vermont, 75% of the electricty is from nuclear and 21% from hydropower. 14

  15. Residential electricity prices are the lowest where hydropower is present (blue dots on the map): Québec, Manitoba, state of Washington and British Columbia. 15
