1. Knowledge is endless – choose wisely अन�तशा�ं ब� वे�दत�ं अ�प� कालो बहव� िव�ाः। यत् सारभूतं तदुपािसत�ं हंसो यथा �ीरिमवांबुिम�म्॥ अन�तशा�ं ananta- śāstraṃ - Textual knowledge is endless; ब� वे�दत�ं bahu veditavya ṃ - much is there to be known; अ�प� कालो alpa ḥ ca kālo – time is limited; बहव� िव�ाः bahava ḥ ca vighnāḥ - the obstacles are many; यत् सारभूतं yat sārab h ūtaṃ - whatever is the essence; तद् उपािसत�ं tad- upāsitavyaṃ - that has to be followed; हंसो यथा ha ṃso yathā – just as a swan; �ीरम् इव k ṣīram iva – in the case of milk; अ�बुिम�म् a ṃ bu-mi śram – mixed with water.
2. An unparalleled wealth सव���ेषु िव�ैव ��मा�रनु�मम् । आहाय��वाद् अनघ��वाद् अ�य�वात् च सव�दा ।। सव���ेषु sarva-dravye ṣ u – Among all types of wealth ; सव�दा sarvad ā – at all times; िव�ा एव vidyā eva – knowledge alone ; अनु�मम् anuttamam – is unparalleled ; आ�ः āhuḥ – (people) say ; अहाय��वाद् āhāryatvād – because it cannot be stolen; अनघ��वाद् anarghatvād – as it cannot be valued ; अ�य�वात् ak ṣayatvā t – because it does not diminish.
3. The hero at home and the hero outside �वगृहे पू�यते मूख�ः �व�ामे पू�यते �भुः। �वदेशे पू�यते राजा िव�ान् सव�� पू�यते॥ मूख�ः mūrkhaḥ - A fool; पू�यते pūjyate – is respected; �वगृहे sva-g ṛ he – in his own house. �भुः prabhu ḥ - a village head; पू�यते pūjyate – is respected; �व�ामे sva- grāme – in his own village; राजा rājā – a king; पू�यते pūjyate – is respected; �वदेशे sva- deśe – in his own kingdom; िव�ान् vidvān – a scholar; पू�यते pūjyate – is respected; सव�� sarvatra – everywhere.
4. Knowledge and money in times of need पु�तकेषु च या िव�ा परह�ते च य�नम् । समये तु प�र�ा�े न सा िव�ा न तत् धनम् ।। या िव�ा yā vidyā - The knowledge which; पु�तकेषु pustake ṣ u – existing in books; यत् धनम् च yat dhanam ca – the money which; परह�ते para-haste - is in someone else’s possession; समये तु प�र�ा�े samaye tu pariprāpte – when time demands; न सा िव�ा na sā vidyā – neither that learning; न तत् धनम् na tat dhanam – nor that money (would be of use).
5. Parenting your child लालयेत् प� वषा�िण दशवषा�िण िश�येत्। �ा�े तु षोडशे वष� पु�ं िम�वदाचरेत्॥ प� वषा�िण pañca var ṣāṇ i – For (the first) five years; लालयेत् lālayet – one should treat lovingly; दशवषा�िण daśa -var ṣāṇ i – for (the next) ten years; िश�येत् śikṣ ayet – one has to educate; षोडशे वष� ṣ o ḍaśe varṣ e – when the sixteenth year; �ा�े तु prāpte tu – is attained; पु�ं putra ṃ - (towards) the son; िम�वदाचरेत् mitravad- ācaret – one has to behave as to a friend.
6. Gods give wisdom to those they wish to protect न देवा द�डमादाय र�ि�त पशुपालवत्। यं िह रि�तुिम�छि�त बु��या संयोजयि�त तम्॥ देवाः devāḥ - The gods; पशुपालवत् paśupāla -vat – like a cattle-herd; द�डमादाय da ṇḍ am- ādāya – by holding a stick in hand; न र�ि�त na rak ṣ anti – do not guard and protect. यं िह ya ṃ hi – Whomever; रि�तुम् इ�छि�त rak ṣ itum icchanti – wish to protect; तम् tam – that person; बु��या संयोजयि�त buddhyā saṃ yojayanti – endow (him) with intellect.
7. Gods take away the wisdom of those whom they wish to punish य�मै देवाः �य�छि�त पु�षाय पराभवम्। बु�� त�यापकष�ि�त सोऽवाचीिन प�यित॥ देवाः devāḥ - The gods; य�मै पु�षाय yasmai puru ṣāya – to the person to whom; �य�छि�त prayacchanti – (desire to) give; पराभवम् parābhavam – disgrace; बु�� buddhi ṃ - the intellect; त�य tasya – of that person; अपकष�ि�त apakar ṣ anti – take away; सः sa ḥ - such person; प�यित paśyati – sees; अवाचीिन avācīni – (things) topsy-turvy.
8. Day-dreaming yields no fruit उ�मेन िह िस��यि�त काया�िण न मनोरथैः। न िह सु��य �सह�य �िवशि�त मुखे मृगाः॥ काया�िण kāryāṇ i – Actions; उ�मेन िह udyamena hi – only by effort; िस��यि�त siddhyanti – materialize, get achieved; न मनोरथैः na mano-rathai ḥ - not by mere desires. मृगाः m ṛgāḥ - Animals; न िह �िवशि�त na hi praviśanti – do not enter; मुखे mukhe – into the mouth; सु��य �सह�य suptasya si ṃ hasya – of a sleeping lion.
9. Slow and steady wins the race ग�छन् िपपीिलका याित योजनानां शता�यिप। अग�छन् वैनतेयोऽिप पदमेकं न ग�छित॥ िपपीिलका pipīlikā – An ant; ग�छन् gacchan – keeping on the move; याित yāti – goes; योजनानां शता�यिप yojanānāṃ śatānyapi – even hundreds of miles. वैनतेयोऽिप vainateya ḥ api – Even Vainateya; अग�छन् agacchan – by not moving; न ग�छित na gacchati – does not go; पदम् एकं padam eka ṃ - (not even) a step.
10. When man is no better than a beast िव�ानाम नर�य �पमिधकं ��छ�गु�ं धनम् िव�ा भोगकरी यश�सुखकरी िव�ा गु�णां गु�ः । िव�ा ब�धुजनो िवदेशगमने िव�ा परा देवता िव�ा राजसु पू�यते निह धनं िव�ािवहीनः पशुः ।। नर�य narasya – For a person; िव�ा नाम vidyā nāma – (the treasure) named knowledge; �पम् अिधकं rūpam adhikaṃ - great beauty. ��छ�गु�ं pracchanna-gupta ṃ - Secretly protected; धनम् dhanam – wealth. िव�ा भोगकरी vidyā bhoga - karī – Knowledge gives all objects of enjoyment; यश�सुखकरी yaśas - sukha- karī – it gives fame and happiness. गु�णां गु�ः gurūṇāṃ guru ḥ - It is the teacher of all teachers. िवदेशगमने videśa -gamane – When a person is in a foreign land; ब�धुजनः bandhu-jana ḥ - it is a relative. परा देवता parā devatā – It is the supreme goddess; राजसु पू�यते rājasu pūjyate – respected among kings; निह धनं na hi dhana ṃ - not wealth indeed. िव�ािवहीनः vidyāvihīnaḥ - One who doesn’t have knowledge; पशुः paśuḥ - (comparable to) a beast.
