. . . . . . 2008 GRNET 3 a Gigabit dark fiber network for Research & Education
GRNET3 country-wide dark fiber • Basic characteristics – 35 PoPs – Fiber optic pair: • 8410 Km • MANs Athens+Thessaloniki • DF local loops in 33 cities (to be delivered)
GRNET3 IP architecture • GRNET3 continues to provide IP services: – IP routers installed at major Greek cities – IP routers connected with 2,5G PoS framed lambdas implemented via GRNET’s DWDM equipment – Clients aggregated to the local GRNET3 routers by using 1GbE framed lambdas implemented via GRNET’s DWDM equipment – For clients with high requirements (called Power Clients – PC) and traffic overcoming 1Gbps, an IP aggregation architecture is implemented • 10Gbps uplinks are aggregated to a major PoP using DWDM and then served at the IP layer 5
GRNET: a human network as well • Members of the academic and research community • Core network Task force • Staff from GRNET HQ • National and EU structural funds groups – Development of GRNET3 action
GRNET NOC • Collaborative development and management of the network • Basic and advanced services – Computing – Storage – Cloud – Media
GR-IX (Greek Internet Exchange) • Neutral Multi Gigabit Greek ISP interconnection • Local traffic stays in Greece
GRNET Media Services developed and operated under the VNOC scheme • video on-demand • live streaming • multicast channels targeted to institutions, not end-users directly
vod.grnet.gr
multicast channels
pilot projects • iptv.grnet.gr • VideoGRID • e-movie
iptv.grnet.gr • GUnet project • Content aggregation portal • Many platforms, players, transports (multicast/unicast), formats (transcoded)
dvb2ip relay – “cheap” IPTV
HDV multicasting HDV camera (<1K) + laptop with 1394 + VLC =
• Objectives – Educate • providing content related to digital video production theory and common practices • providing experts’ help – Promote • university students’ creativity in the area of video production • self-expression through producing short films – Build a shared interest community and attract original content – Motivate • undergoing short film production contest among university students’ – Productions up to 10 minutes; Free context; Several prizes – Winner decided 50% from audience, 50% from an experts’ in film production group • Initial thoughts – for an annual web short film festival – for hosting several thematic video production contests • Current status – 250 registered users with an average increase of 5 registrations/day – several daily visits from registered and unregistered users – 15 submissions, expected to double or triple until the contest’s deadline (20 Apr) – several comments provided to each submission indicate high interest and an active community
Related efforts • Hellenic Parliament TV • Philadelphia Orchestra (cooperation with TCH, AUTh and PhilOrch) • New Acropolis Museum opening ceremony (cooperation with ERT – National Broadcaster) • Webcasting & recording for Greek Government Cabinet meetings (in support OpenGov.gr)
«Transmission of Cultural Events over the Internet»
Philadelphia Orchestra Global Concert Series • 25+ venues around the world • 2 in Greece: AUTH and TCH
Parliament TV • First contact with professional (=expensive) IPTV/broadcasting hardware • 6 programs in 1 RU

GRNET4 Next generation of GRNET network and services
GRNET4: Network infrastructure evolution • Robust services over interconnected networks – Federated model – Federated management (topology exchange, monitoring, security and control) • Network of the future – User-controlled virtual networks • Technologies – Transmission: ROADMs (incl. control plane) – Transport: Protocol agnostic switching (e.g. T-MPLS) – Connectivity: IP • Service Oriented Architecture – Control functionality embedded in middleware, exploiting AAI
Goals • An environment for the development of new technologies and research • “Intelligent” backbone network with dynamic adjustment capabilities for increased traffic requirements • Operational optimization, management functions • Resources directly accessible by users • Extension of the geographical coverage • Advanced media services • Interconnecting R&D institutions with significant digital content (museums, libraries), content production and distribution services • Interconnecting non-R&D institutions for the exchanges of educational, cultural and public- interest content • Soft actions for the widespread use of new services by the country’s R&D community
Advanced services Computational infrastructure Diverse network infrastructure
Research networking for Science • Computational and network infrastructure : – High Energy Physics – Meteorology – Astronomy (processing data from distributed telescopes) – Medical data exchange and processing – Earth observation – World climate change observation – Medicine research – Economic market research – ….
Services for Scientific Research sharing & collaboration • Service for Data-Intensive Science: secure repositories for use by scientific groups – Storage and processing of large data sets • Integrated Collaborative Environments – Portal, Wiki, Instant Messaging System, videoconferencing • Virtual Research Environment – Desktop-based or web-based applications for developing and sharing workflows – Networking environment for sharing and finding experiments, protocols, workflows, experimental results, scientific data, papers, technical reports – Management of multimedia material • Service for sharing access to scientific instruments, sensors etc.
Large scale and high-definition videoconferencing services – Adaptive web-based videoconferencing service • Automatically adapts to different network conditions (end-to-end) and endpoint capabilities – Interactive applications in HD • Multicast-based • Equipment for production and playback for high-fidelity, (larger than) HD, low-latency interactive applications
Advanced services for managing and distributing academic media • AAI-supported services for multimedia production and distribution by and for all members of the academic & research community. • Applications for processing, archiving, indexing and distributing media. • Use of the computing and storage infrastructure of GRNET for processing and archiving of digital media • Integration with GRNET network services for transporting and providing access to digital media of “content producer & provider” category of institutions connected to GRNET.
GRNET & Media: future directions • 15+ content providers • Live events – Aggregation and Presentation • Recording for these events • Media platform to support publishing of recordings • Integration or interoperability with other AMM&D platforms
