‘ Children who read for pleasure are likely to do better in maths and English than those who rarely read in their free time, research suggests.’ The Institute of Education, 2013
Drop Everything and Read DEAR time! Most of the session should be dedicated to students reading fiction or non fiction books.
Your DEAR day • Turing – Thursday • Angelou – Wednesday • Ellis – Wednesday • Russell – Friday
Reading for pleasure 1. Regular readers -can you read more challenging fiction? 2. Used to be readers -can you find the habit again? 3. Could be readers- what is stopping you? How can you make the time? 4. Never-never readers- what will work? Pair reading? Subscriptions?
Time to pledge, plan and read! Encourage your child to use www.arbookfind.co.uk to find books they want to read. This interactive book list enables students to search by author, theme and browse collections. Complete the ‘pledge, plan and read’ sheets.
How important is good attendance? • A pupil with 90% attendance throughout their school life will have missed a whole school year – nearly one thousand hours of learning.
Punctuality
Key facts • Missing just 17 days in one year can mean dropping a full grade at GCSE. • The rate of offending by young people who truant school is 3 times higher than those who do not truant. • School truants are 6 times more likely to be unemployed. • 5 or more GCSEs can increase wages by 42%.
1 st Data harvest • Life without levels • You may have heard in the press that national curriculum levels are going. • We have introduced our own system of progress grades. • Students work will be graded against their target grade, which is on the 1-9 grade system.
Life without levels • Grade 5 is the equivalent to a grade C, however, under the new GCSE’s a grade 5 is more difficult to achieve than a current grade C. • This is a deliberate government decision to increase the standards that our students achieve.
1 st Data harvest • If a student is working beyond their target grade, they will be given a progress grade of ‘Excelling’ • If a students is working at the same level as their target grade, they will get a progress grade of ‘Good’ • If a student is working a grade below their target grade, they will be given a progress grade of ‘developing’ • If a student is working 2 grades below their target grade, they will be given a progress grade of ‘Inadequate’ • These terms have been used so that all students are judged on the progress that they are making towards their targets, not just their ability, which can be demotivating
Making the Grade Evenings • Making the grade evenings from year 8-11. • Evenings organised to support parents/carers in supporting their child to make progress and reach target grades. • Option choices/fair • Subject specific workshops • Revision techniques • Support in preparing for exams
