SEMESTER 2 EXAMS The rules, the tips and the tricks
WHAT’S THE POINT? BEFORE THE EXAMS • What exams do I have? What times? • What do you need for your exams? Get this stuff organised • Calculators (spare batteries), pens, pencils, rulers, protractors, notes? • What will be in the exam? Talk to your teachers • Some students without exams may be required to attend school during the exam week to complete school work • Ensure you are in school uniform, as normal when you are at school • Expect to help set up the hall
DURING THE EXAMS 1. Arrive at least 10 minutes before your exam start time (Over 30 minutes late - cannot enter the exam room) 2. Leave all other items (bags etc) in F3 – this room will be locked during the exams 3. Assemble outside VIBE cafe 4. Mr Naylor will call students in exam by exam and will tell you where to sit 5. You will need to have your notes and other items brought into the exam room checked by the supervising teachers 6. Fill out your exam attendance slip 7. Reading time starts at 9.00am or 1.30pm – this lasts for 10 minutes 8. Writing time starts after that Exams are on the desks – if there isn’t an exam on your desk you’re not sitting in the right spot! • Some exams you will answer in the exam paper, some exams you will write in a script booklet • Some exams have additional pages or resources for you to refer to • All exams will have some note paper for you to use •
AFTER THE EXAMS • Take your rubbish with you • Return items you borrowed during the exam: Dictionaries • Stationary • • Return all textbooks, novels etc. to library • Some exams may be continuing when you leave – be respectful to these students • Stage 2 Exams are also continuing at the same time – T -floor will be out of bounds • Normal classes are finished for the year, Year 12 ready programme will run in week 6 • Only attend the sessions for the subject you have selected in 2020

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN THINGS GO WRONG? • Examples: Lateness outside your control • Illness or injury severe enough to prevent you attending the exam • • Contact the school • If it is due to illness, go to the doctor and get a doctor’s certificate • If it is an acceptable reason the school may: Permit you to sit the exam with some additional time • Re-schedule the exam to another day (this does not happen in Stage 2 Exams) • Provide you with special provisions •
CLASHES • Some students have Stage 2 exams on at the same time • Some students have two stage 1 exams on at the same time • Some students may have a VET day at the same time as their exam • An exam in the morning and an exam in the afternoon is NOT a clash! What to do: Send a daymap message to Mr Naylor • Attend Stage 2 exams as per the timetable • Attend your VET day as normal (some VET course are finished and some can negotiate • alternative times) – Please communicate! Mr Naylor will message you in the week before the exams to tell you when to sit the • rescheduled exam All rescheduled exams will be during the exam week – there is no catch up time in week 6! •
SPECIAL PROVISIONS There are a variety of reasons why you may not be disadvantaged in completing exams to the ability • of an average student Special provisions are available to those students. This could be: • Extra time • Ability to have rest breaks • Ability to use a computer to type your answers rather than hand-write them • How do I get them? • If you had them in Semester 1, you don’t need to re-apply • Organise an appointment with Mr Naylor by sending a Daymap Message • Usually for a short term or long term medical condition • E.g.: • Short term (Broken arm) • Long term (Dyslexia) •

STUDY TIPS Study tip Suggested strategies work space with table or desk quiet with no distractions such as phones or TV Create a space well lit and comfortable have everything you need nearby; books, pens etc. devise a timetable for the next few weeks (blank template available at Examination and Study Info) build in planned activities, e.g. family outings Devise a plan leave time available for unforeseen events divide your time between subjects to vary your revision, mix subjects you are good at with those which are more challenging make a weekly list of study goals for each subject and tick them off when you achieve them (blank template available at Examination and Study Info) review and revise your weekly list take regular breaks, 10 minutes each hour is good summarise small sections of your work at a time Break it down using dot points can make it easier to review the summaries nearer the time of the exam speaking out loud may help to lock facts in your memory things you find hard to remember can be written on sticky notes and put on doors, walls and mirrors
