WR227 Homework Assignment In-Class Oral Presentation with Visual Aid(s) Objective: Demonstrate your skill in selecting and organizing material for an oral presentation to specified audience, including your use of effective visual aids. Your baseline will be that of an inexperienced presenter – you are not expected to be a professional! Topic: You may choose any topic you wish for your presentation. You do not need approval for your topic, but use common sense. I recommend you NOT choose sex, politics, religion, and any other topic that might reasonably be considered offensive to some or all your classmates and/or result in disciplinary action for your instructor. You may use the topic of your technical paper, or you may choose something completely unrelated and/or non-technical (hobby, etc.). Please do not make a persuasive presentation. It must be factual and objective. Length: You must speak between three and five minutes. Setup and breakdown times are not counted in this range; however, they should be kept to a minimum as a courtesy to your audience and the speakers waiting to present. The timing will begin when you start to speak. At an elapsed time of three minutes, I will hold up a green card, at four minutes a yellow card, and at five minutes, a red card that indicates your presentation has gone past the upper time limit. If you get a red card, do not panic – just wrap up quickly and smoothly. Style: Make your presentation and visuals in a style consistent with those you have seen in the WR227 classroom. Your audience is your classmates and your instructor. If you use humor, do so tastefully, carefully, and with full awareness of the hazards. Define and/or explain any terms, abbreviations, or acronyms that might be unfamiliar to your audience. Because of the short length of the presentation, do NOT cite your sources (as you would in any other formal presentation). Do not ask for questions at the end. Dress, speak, and act in a professional manner (“business casual”). Visuals: You must use at least one visual aid. You may use as many more as you wish, but remember that too many will detract from your presentation’s effectiveness. A “visual aid” can be an object you bring in, Powerpoint slides, a Prezi presentation, a flip chart, something you draw or write on the whiteboard, etc. It must be legible for everyone in the room. (Handouts are discouraged, and will not count as visual aids if used.) Do not bring in weapons, drugs, alcohol, or other prohibited items! If in doubt, ask your instructor. You will be graded on the effectiveness of your visual aid(s) in supporting your presentation, and on the aesthetics and legibility (for everyone in the room) of the visual aid itself. Be careful with your font size and typeface, grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure, format, legibility, etc. If you use presentation software or the document viewer, take into account the warm-up time of the projector. It is your responsibility to learn how to use the A/V equipment before the day you present! If you use a cloud-based presentation application, it is your responsibility to make sure it is accessible from the classroom computer. Be aware that the classroom computers do not have LibreOffice programs; if you create any visuals in LibreOffice Impress, you must “Save As” PowerPoint files or “Export to PDF” files for classroom use. Attendance: Presenting is stressful for the person in the front of the room. An attentive, supportive audience is a real help. You are expected to be there for the entire class period on both days of the presentation series. As presented in the Syllabus, 10 course grade points depend on your being there (day 1: 5 points, day 2: 5 points). Exceptions: If you have a genuine anxiety issue or other legitimate reason why you cannot present to the whole room, tell me in advance. We will make arrangements for a one-on-one presentation. Due dates: You will present during one of the two class days of the 10 th week of the term (next week, on Tuesday, June 4 or Thursday, June 6). You will not know which day you will present! Names will be drawn randomly from a sign-up sheet, so please be prepared to be the first presenter on the first day. If your name is drawn and you are not prepared to present, say so on the sign-up sheet and you will be deferred until the next day – with a letter-grade penalty. If you do not present at all, you will receive an “X” (0 points) for the assignment, a painful (if not fatal) loss of 40 points. You do not need to turn in any printed materials for this assignment. Weighting: The oral presentation delivery is worth 30 points, 5% of your final grade. The visual aid(s) is worth 10 points, 2% of your final grade. Grading : You will be graded on the criteria in the Grading Sheet on the reverse of this page. You are not expected to be polished speakers. Grading will be based on choice of material, organization, introduction/wrapup, understandability, suitability of presentation for the specific audience, helpfulness of your visual aid(s), and so on. Grading will be done on the Oral Presentation and Visual Aid(s) Grading Criteria sheet, attached. You will receive the sheet and your grade immediately after presenting.
