BACKGROUND OF WCSDG REPORT • WCSDG created in February 2002 • Two Co-Chairs, 19 independent members, five ex-officio members from ILO • Diverse backgrounds - business, labour, politics, academia and civil society • First systematic attempt to analyze the social dimension of globalization • Report launched in February 2004 • First report on globalization based on dialogue and search for common ground WCSDG: World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization

MEDIA, CULTURE AND ICTs IN THE REPORT • ICTs as enablers of globalization • Access to information via global media • Increased awareness of global disparities • Spread of democracy • Cultures and values affected by globalization – Concern for dominance of English and Western-owned media – Concern for homogenization of news, views, cultures and values ICTs: Information and Communication Technologies

  4. MAIN MESSAGES OF THE REPORT • Critical but positive view of globalization • Many benefits, but also widening inequalities and exclusion • Fair rules • Better governance for a fair and inclusive globalization • Dialogue among all social actors • Decent work for all

GOVERNANCE AND GLOBAL PRODUCTION SYSTEMS • Beginning at home – coordinated/integrated policy responses – building national institutions – local and national governance • Emergence of global production systems – Risk of a “race-to-the-bottom” through incentive competition – More cooperation on cross-border competition policy for equal market access
