WHAT IS WBL? • Work Based Learning provides an opportunity to be considered for employment and career exploration in your field of interest. By participating in this program, you indicate that you are sincerely interested in receiving on-the-job training. • It allows students to expand on their experience and resume while earning an income.
STATE FUNDED PROGRAM • The link below shows that the Work Based Learning Program rules and guidelines (and information in this presentation) are guided by the State of Indiana and the GWC (Governor’s Workforce Cabinet). • Basically: The rules are not made up by the Coordinator of the Program or the school but the State of Indiana. • https://www.in.gov/gwc/2445.htm (You do not have to click on the link…just for reference)
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHER

RULES & REGULATIONS • The Internship Coordinator (and School Administrators) reserves the right to deny ANY placement for ANY reason. I understand that if I do not comply with ALL rules and regulations then I will be removed from the program and my grade will reflect the removal. (Including the school’s attendance policy, which states that if the student has over 10 days of absences they can be removed from the program.) I understand that I must provide my own transportation to and from the work site before I can be considered for the Work Based Learning Program. I also understand that I will commit to the program for the entire year, accepting all the responsibilities placed upon me in the related class and on the job.
ISSUES & FAQ’S • What if I lose my job? • Get another one ASAP – The coordinator sends out opportunities for students daily! Most fast food places are hiring and most are able to start you in 3 to 4 days from applying. • What if I can’t get my paycheck stubs? • It is Federal law that your employer provides them or access to them through a website or app. • Hours? • It depends on how many credits you need (see next slide) • Site Visits? • The coordinator MUST come to your work (scheduled appointment) and complete an observation form for the state. • Final Exams? • More information will be given out about that during the course of the year • What happens if I continue to not follow the rules and comply? • You will be removed from the program and go back to school full days • Make sure you check out as you leave the building by showing your ID & stickers to the person in charge of Door 1 entrance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS • Work Based Learning is a great program for our seniors (And state funded through the GWC)! • Most seniors do not need any additional credits and it allows them to gain some real work/world experience while also getting paid. I go into businesses weekly and look at opportunities for our students and send the information out to them using REMIND 101. I have a list of businesses hiring (unfortunately, it changes so frequently with time and season). • The student must apply and get their work permit on their own, I am unable to do that for them. However, I am their own personal resource and help each student individually with any needs that they may have during the process! I use Remind 101 and they are able to get a hold of me pretty quickly with questions. The amount that a student works depends on their credit situation, hours that are offered at their employer, and how much they want to work. • 1 credit = 7.5 hours per week that they must work (Scheduled for 1 period off of the school day) • 2 credits = 10 hours (Scheduled for 2 period off of the school day) • 3 credits = 15 hours (Scheduled for 3 period off of the school day) • The weeks are from Monday - Sunday and the students can work anytime after they leave the school building but not necessarily at that time. I have a lot of students who do all of their hours on the weekends! • I hope this answers a lot of questions for you! Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions!
