Women’s Health Research Centre The rights of indigenous peoples- reducing the burden of HPV disease • HPV is the main cause cervical cancer and genital warts and is associated with cancers of the anus, oropharynx, penis, vagina and vulva. • Globally Indigenous peoples have a greater burden of HPV disease • Higher incidence and higher death rate • HPV is an opportunity to reduce disparities and absolute disease burden for indigenous persons • New Zealand M ā ori have twice the incidence and four times the death rate from cervical cancer than non- M ā ori.
