  4. What are Human Rights? Human Rights are the rights a person has simply because they are a human being . Human rights are those basic standards without which people cannot live with dignity . Human rights principles hold up the vision of a free, just, and peaceful world , and set minimum standards for how individuals and institutions everywhere should treat people.

  5. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. It is currently made up of 193 Member States. The mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. The United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948 and consists of 30 articles that identify and explain the basic rights and freedoms of all people. Human Rights Education (HRE) Human Rights Education is a deliberate , participatory practice aimed at empowering individuals , groups, and communities through fostering knowledge , skills, and attitudes consistent with internationally recognized human rights principles. Its goal is to help people understand human rights, value human rights, and take responsibility for respecting, defending, and promoting human rights. Human Rights Education encompasses education about human rights, through human rights, and for human rights.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM Speak Truth to Power is a multidimensional human rights education program that combines powerful storytelling and interactive learning to provide this generation with the knowledge and tools necessary to end and prevent human rights abuses around the world. To date, our work has inspired an estimated 5.7 million students, teachers, community leaders, and citizens, teaching them to be empathetic and emboldened champions of human rights .

STTP OBJECTIVES Our vision for a just and peaceful world through HRE is grounded in: ● Building educator capacity to ingrain human rights education into the fabric of their pedagogy ● Reinforcing attitudes, mindsets and behaviors in the learning process for all participants so that they advance and protect human rights in their everyday lives All participants identifying as human ● rights defenders through mindful action (Aligned with UDHR and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs))

  10. APPROACH Human rights through storytelling What sets us apart is our commitment to telling stories. Motivated and defined by the lives and activism of 60+ human rights defenders, our work is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, employing the words, opinions and courage of these defenders as entry points into understanding and promoting universal human rights law, standards, and advocacy.

  13. WHAT WE DO Over 60 teacher-developed lesson >1.4 MILLION Lesson plans available in 7 languages and used STUDENTS in 18 countries. Available for students plans REACHED from kindergarten to law school. We host an annual music contest in >5,000 ENTRIES AND partnership with the GRAMMY museum, Contests >55,000 STUDENTS and an annual film contest in partnership REACHED with the Tribeca Film Festival. STTP provides in-depth plans and Educator >9,090 EDUCATORS trainings for implementation in schools and communities. We also host online trainings TRAINED events for sharing STTP best practices. A play, Speak Truth to Power: Voices PERFORMED IN >30 Beyond the Dark, by award-winning play COUNTRIES AND IN Play -wright, Ariel Dorfman performed by actors 9 LANGUAGES such as Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore. A traveling photo exhibit with Photo DISPLAYED IN 4 portraits by Pulitzer-Prize winning exhibit CONTINENTS photographer, Eddie Adams.

  14. INSIDE A LESSON PLAN Each lesson is aligned with UDHR articles and provides tips for teachers for implementation (including guiding questions and grade suggestions). Each lesson plan aligns with Common Core Learning Standards so that human rights education serves as a tool to achieve existing curricula objectives.

  15. The “Become a Defender” section calls on students to use what they have learned to take targeted and mindful action for change.

  17. DISCOVERY EDUCATION Through our partnership with Discovery Education our human rights education materials have the potential to reach 3 million teachers and 30 million students .   20. Music Contest Speak Up, Sing Out Music Contest In 2015, STTP and the GRAMMY museum hosted an inaugural concert for the Speak Up, Sing Out Music contest. The concert featured musicians such as Melissa Etheridge, Rocky Dawuni, and David Crosby. With creativity and activism serving as the theme of the evening, the event brought together several generations, proving that art can serve as the perfect platform for change.
