Why is VTEC/Ecoli 0157 Important? • Gram negative bacteria, facultative anaerobe • Lives in gut of cattle and sheep, & environment • Small infective dose (<100 organisms) • Diarrhoea/bloody, fever, cramps……..HUS • Outbreaks • 240 cases per year in Scotland • Needs multi-agency action to control
