  15. What to Expect (1 of 2) We made a pledge to provide comfortable lodging for up to 15 people while minimizing our environmental impact to the lowest possible level. Ó The Property and Amenities Ó Buildings are made of natural elements like teak wood, bamboo, mud, and straw. Ó All mattresses are made of natural latex. Ó The lights in the garden are solar lights and during the rainy season, we provide members and guests with electric torches. Ó No air conditioning on the property. Everything is cooked slowly, using fire wood stoves only, three times a day. Ó Some electrical appliances are being used as it is more efficient for cold pressed vegetable or fruit juices and blending. A washing machine is available on site. Ó We aim to avoid the use of plastic bottles and packaging and ask the same from our members and guests. Ó Hot water is exclusively generated with solar energy (intermittent). Ó A fridge is available for occasional use as no food is stored overnight. 16

  16. What to Expect (2 of 2) Ó Water, Waste Management and Cleaning Water is collected from the rain and filtered but for those who are concerned, we can provide Ó boiled water for drinking purposes as an additional precaution. We invested in a micro dam to capture rain water for irrigation and for a hydro power Ó plant but then invested in a small diesel generator as keeping the water seemed more valuable. Ó Waste management is another area where compromise is very difficult. In order to ensure waste water is collected and centralized, we had to organize the showers, toilets and urinals in a dedicated area away from the living area. However, to improve comfort, we built two toilets accessible from the ground floor of the members and guests rooms to be used exclusively at night and during heavy rain. Ó Cleaning is probably the most polluting activity in terms of waste water, energy and detergents. We will only change linen every five nights for the same guests and encourage our members and guests to stay a minimum of two nights. We also try to only change the towels every three nights but acknowledge that sometimes every two nights is necessary. The product of all of the above is that Wanakaset is full of life . Animals, birds, and insects feel at home but so do snakes, monkeys or deer. Nights can be noisy as the forest takes over its normal activity. 17
