What is personality? - The combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character.
What is theory? - a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.
The role of theory - Psychologists use theories to explain how and why the human personality develops - Not all theories apply to all cultures around the world
Freuds Theory - Believed a person's personality is made up of three aspects; Id, Ego, and Superego - Id = consists of the biological urges, like hunger and thirst - Ego = the thoughtful/decision making part of personality - Superego = judges right from wrong, possibly against urges
Eriksons Theory - Believed in the eight stage theory - Eight stage theory: a person’s personality developed over time from childhood, made up of experiences
Maslow's theory - Believed everyone has a basic drive to achieve his or her fullest potential - Called this process “ self-actualization” - Believed most people won’t/can’t reach their full potential
