  1. What is Community Transport? “We all need a lift sometimes… get yours with Community Transport” Presentation by CTO’s Sector Development Manager, Kate Toohey

  2. Who or what is is th the CT CTO - Community Transport Organisation? The Community Transport Organisation (CTO) is the peak body for community transport in New South Wales. It is dedicated to strengthening community and political awareness of community transport; as well as representing and advocating on behalf of community transport services in NSW. Community Transport Organisation is proud to have been providing professional leadership, support and resources to its community transport service members for over 25 years, and pride themselves on being transparent, ethical and honest. As an advisory and consultative body, Community Transport Organisation work proactively with many organisations and other transport providers to contribute to the wider community transport Sector.

  3. What is is Community Transport? From suburban cities to remote rural communities, community transport assists people from many walks of life to continue living an independent life. Community transport groups provide non-profit transport that caters to the needs of frail aged people and their carers who cannot make use of private or public transport systems; younger persons with moderate or severe disabilities; and isolated residents living in rural areas who do not have access to public transport. How can I access Community Transport? Community transport is available for almost anyone requiring transportation. Depending on your circumstances you may need to go through a short assessment and registration process. The best way to do this is to contact your local community transport service provider directly – contact details via the CTO .

  4. What makes Community Transport dif ifferent? Community Transport is: • For frail aged (Aboriginal people over age of 50 years), people living with disabilities, and transport disadvantaged communities across all of NSW • Door to door service (different to taxis who are curb to curb or buses that run to a set route) • Heavily subsidised for eligible clients (funding is provided by State and Federal Government) • Flexible and reliable transport to community, medical, shopping, and social appointments and activities • Caring and trained staff and volunteers – able to assist people with mobility difficulties, including handling and tie down of wheelchairs, walkers, etc. • There are Aboriginal specific Community Transport Service Providers and Aboriginal Transport Development Officers across NSW • Many Community Transport services have specialised CALD services, with some services in high CALD density communities hiring multi-lingual staff

  5. What does Community Transport lo look lik like in in NSW? • In 2013-2014 Community Transport Providers travelled over 35 million kilometres • There are an estimated 136000 community transport clients • There are 93 Community Transport Contract Holders in NSW and 112 Community Transport Outlets and related services • Over 1600 Employees • Approximately 3500 Volunteers providing around 19,000 hours of service • Community Transport Services delivered more than 2.1 million trips, including nearly 270,000 Community Care Supports Program-funded trips

  6. How can I I work wit ith Community Transport organisations? • Community Transport Service Providers (CTSPs) are spread across the whole of NSW, and vary in size and make-up of the services they offer • First step is to get in touch with the CTSP manager or the management board – you can get contact details from CTO or we can assist you to make contact • Next step is to work out ways to partner and work together to connect to community and provide safe and accessible transport options • You can also work with your region’s Aboriginal Transport Development Officer and with the NSW Aboriginal Transport Network • The CTO’s Sector Development Manager (Kate Toohey) is also available to work with you to make these connections and partnerships

  7. How can th the Macarthur Transport Working Group work best with th the CT CTO? • The CTO covers the whole of NSW and has strategic partnerships with a variety of stakeholders, including Transport for NSW, NSW Health and the Sector Support Workers funded by the Commonwealth (formerly the HACC Development Officers) • The CTO works with our members to achieve strategic outcomes for the Community Transport sector and transport disadvantaged client groups – for us to work collaboratively with MTWG, you would need to become a member • Work together on aligned transport goals, build and develop a model for working with CT providers which we can then transpose to other areas and regions • Collaborative working partnership whereby we promote and support the work of each organisation and our representative members
