Summary • LA R.S. 38:101.C requires that, “ Upon completion of the construction of the hurricane protection projects, the responsibility for maintenance and operation of the hurricane protection system shall be assumed by the West Jefferson Levee District, the Orleans Levee District (Algiers Levee District) , Plaquemines Parish, and the Lafourche Basin Levee District, respectively for those portions of the system within each of the parishes .” • State of Louisiana is not responsible for Operation and Maintenance of the system. • The system needs to be maintained to provide the 100 year level of flood protection and to maintain certification required in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in order to provide Jefferson Parish affordable flood insurance rates. • Additional millage would equate to less than $4 per month for the average value of a home on the Westbank (Average home value on Westbank is $175k).
