4 KEY THOUGHTS The world of work has changed from when we went to school – job for life, industries, pragmatic movement, automation, required skill sets There are a number of pathways from here to further study and work and there will be a number of pathways from there as well Each child is different and they have their dreams and aspirations (they may well not match our parental dreams and aspirations) – the juggling act is to provide the support balanced with the reality – Make the endpoint match the kid –not the kid match the endpoint Be informed – there is a great deal of information available –we are providing it through our careers program

OP V.S ATAR All students at SSC select 6 subjects to study throughout year 11 and year 12
ATAR Approximately 30 students across Queensland will gain ATAR of 99.95 Approximately another 30 students will gain ATAR of 99.90 Calculated from Unit 3 & 4 results only.
ATAR ELGIBILITY AND ENGLISH To gain an ATAR, students must also satisfactorily pass one of the following subjects: ü English ü Essential English ü Literature While students must meet this standard to be eligible to receive an ATAR, it won’t be mandatory for a student’s English result to be included in the calculation of their ATAR. ESSENTIAL ENGLISH SPECIALIST MATHEMATICS ACCOUNTING BUSINESS MODERN HISTORY MUSIC
GENERAL AND EXTENSION SUBJECTS New and redeveloped General subject syllabuses (currently known as Authority subjects) are developmental four-unit courses of study. General subjects include Extension subjects and include external assessment. Extension subjects are studied either concurrently with Units 3 and 4 of the General course of study. MUSIC + MUSIC EXTENSION Extension syllabuses are courses of study that consist of two units (Units 3 and 4). The results from Units 3 and 4 contribute to the award of a QCE and to ATAR calculations.
EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS External assessments will be held annually in Term 4. The assessment schedule will be released in the year prior to the external assessment sittings. At most, students may be required to sit two external assessments in one day External assessment for General Mathematics, Science, Arts, Languages and Music Extension subjects will cover subject matter in Units 3 and 4 of the syllabus. For all other General subjects, it will assess subject matter in Unit 4. General Mathematics and Science subjects, a student’s external assessment result will contribute 50% to their final subject result. All other General subjects, it will contribute 25%. There will be no catch-up day if students are sick, etc., on the day of the assessment
APPLIED SUBJECTS Applied subjects are suited to students who are primarily interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to vocational education and training or work. Applied syllabuses are developmental four-unit courses of study. Results from assessment in Applied subjects contribute to the award of a QCE and results from Units 3 and 4 may contribute as a single input to ATAR calculation. Applied syllabuses use four summative internal assessments from Units 3 and 4 to determine a student’s exit result. The CIA for Essential English and Essential Mathematics is based on the learning described in Unit 3 of the respective syllabus
VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING VET certificates and qualifications provide a range of pathways to work, further education and training and is a key part of the ATAR and new QCE system. Achievement of a VET Certificate III or above, in combination with results in General subjects, can contribute to the calculation of a student’s Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Each VET qualification level (certificate III or higher) will have a single scaled score that can be included in a student’s ATAR. It is expected that the scaled score for a completed VET diploma will be higher than that for a completed VET certificate IV, which in turn will be higher than the scaled score for a completed VET certificate III.
