Welcome to Year 9 Options 2016 Kevin Bawn, Principal Clyst Vale Specialising In Success
Part of a bigger picture… • The present Government see the curriculum meeting society’s needs through a more academic approach to age 16; the English Baccalaureate promotes a traditional suite of subjects, accountability reforms mean students are expected to take 8 GCSEs with fewer equivalents than before, and vocational courses now include an examined element
…but at the individual level • Important choices • First time choices have narrowed • Hard thing is what to leave out (4 options, 18 available) • Range of possible emotions
Good news !! It is impossible to make a bad choice which will ruin your life chances for ever, and condemn you to a lifetime of misery and regret.
Issues for Y10 Sept 2016 • Greater emphasis on the EBacc • Best 8 points score • All GCSE courses are linear • First year when almost all GCSEs are graded 9-1 • Education or work based training until 18
The English Baccalaureate • English Language, Maths, Combined Science, History or Geography already in our Core • Just add French or Spanish • Fits ability level of 70% of CVCC students • Provides a broad, balanced curriculum • Has become a performance table benchmark
The English Baccalaureate • How important is it? • How will universities react? • Why isn’t Clyst Vale making it compulsory like some schools? • Should my son/daughter pick EB subjects?
How to choose • Use all the information • Take advice • Think through the consequences • Think through the details • Be an individual, don’t follow the crowd • Choose for enjoyment and success • Choose a Language if most Grades are Bs and above • Be aware of possible career pathways
How NOT to choose… • “I really like Miss Terry, she’s really nice” • “My mates are all doing….” • “My mum/uncle says I must….” • “Gran said she hated Latin at school….” • “I want to do a new subject…” • “XXX is an easier subject…”
