Slide 6 WHERE ARE STUDENTS NOW? Year 10 • Students have made the transition from Key Stage 3 Mathematics to GCSE Mathematics. • There is a new national GCSE mathematics curriculum. Along with the government agenda for education at the moment, it contains more challenging content and a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. We have been working hard to ensure that our students are well-equipped to deal with these changes. • The government have confirmed the details regarding content and style of examinations (July 2015). • All assessments since Year 9 have been in the style of the new GCSE and are now graded 1-9 using new GCSE criteria. Slide 7 GROWING MATHEMATICIANS What are we, as the mathematics department, doing to help grow mathematicians equipped to face the new challenging GCSE? How can you help at home? Tudor Grange Academy 2016
Slide 8 GROWING MATHEMATICIANS A ‘MASTERY CURRICULUM’ Recently, there has been a lot of national research into ‘mastery’ and the success of this approach in other countries. Here, it will support success with the new GCSE. The essential idea behind ‘mastery’ is that all children need a deep understanding of the mathematics they are learning. Tudor Grange Academy 2016

Slide 12 GROWING MATHEMATICIANS The scheme of work for Year 10 • Gives time to delve deeper and to understand the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ . • Gives opportunities to all children to meet and understand each topics covered. • Allows greater links to be made across topic area, including back to content from Years 7-9. Key Topics : Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Indices, Surds, Circle Theorems, Similarity, Quadratics, Simultaneous Equations, Trigonometry, Vectors, Probability, Venn Diagrams Tudor Grange Academy 2016
Slide 13 GROWING MATHEMATICIANS Promoting a ‘Growth Mindset ’ • All students cover the same topics, to as challenging a level as possible. • The questions assess problem-solving skills and resilience. They are deliberately designed so that they will not be straight forward for any child, even if they have worked on the topic area. Our green homework sheets have been designed with this in mind. Tudor Grange Academy 2016
Slide 14 GROWING MATHEMATICIANS Features of Growth Mindset • Ability is not fixed, but we can build our abilities. • Focus on the importance of learning and the process – effort is the way to grow. • Understanding that setbacks are a part of growth (displaying resilience). • Research shows that students with a growth mindset progress better over time than those with a fixed mindset. Tudor Grange Academy 2016
Slide 15 FURTHER ASSESSMENTS • There will be further internal assessments (every half term) in Years 10 and 11, so that students have regular opportunities to practise examination-style problems. The next assessments will take place on Monday 12 th December • and will cover Measure, Real Life Graphs and Functions, topics that have been covered since October half term. Tudor Grange Academy 2016
Slide 16 YEAR 11 • Students continue to study the breadth and depth of GCSE mathematics, covering the last few topics and revising, gradually working towards their target grade by the end of Year 11. • Mathematics is a cumulative subject – students need to draw on prior knowledge at all levels in order to be able to understand the next concept. • The GCSE examinations are taken at the end of Year 11. • Additional Mathematics will probably be offered as an enrichment opportunity for the highest achievers who want to extend their knowledge beyond GCSE – taking place in an after school club. Tudor Grange Academy 2016
Slide 17 TIER OF ENTRY • Two tiers of entry: Higher (grades 9-4) Foundation (grades 5-1) • Students will be entered for the tier that gives them the best possible chance of achieving their potential based on their target and ability. • All students follow the same SoW but will go into the topic in varying depth. • The final decision for tier of entry will be made in Year 11. • For some students, studying for foundation tier is the best way to ensure that they can achieve a grade 4 or 5 in mathematics – grade 5 is the likely benchmark that will be needed for many further education providers and employers, and can still be accessed on foundation tier. • Tudor Grange Academy 2016
Slide 18 WHAT EXTRA SUPPORT WILL STUDENTS RECEIVE? • Students can request a study support with their teacher if they feel that they need extra help. • Designated teachers to support underachieving students ( SASMs, mathematics mentor ). • Login for mymaths website – lesson to support learning and homework. • Login for mathswatch website - videos and worksheets to support learning and homework. • Extensive revision programme for final examinations. • Other resources will be available to support independent revision as your child progresses through Years 10 and 11. Slide 20 HOW CAN YOU HELP? • Ensure that homework is attempted. • Encourage your child to have a growth mindset and positive approach towards their mathematics work, even though it is challenging! • Ensure that your child has and uses all of the mathematical equipment they need (calculator, ruler, compass and protractor). • Encourage your child to make use of all of the resources available and work independently on mathematics at home. www.mymaths.co.uk Login: tudor Password: graph vle.mathswatch.com Login: 13 + Surname + Initial + @tgacademy Password: mathswatch Tudor Grange Academy 2016

Slide 22 COURSE SUMMARY Combined English Language & English Literature • Qualifications are all assessed though examination. • 2 exams for each qualification. • Different exercise book for different exams; Literature = blue x 2 (minimum). Language = yellow x 1. • Marked with new 9-1 grades. • AQA mark schemes but no official way of converting to 9-1. So, boundaries are unofficial. (Official boundaries will not be released until after cohort has completed the courses). Tudor Grange Academy 2016

Slide 25 WHAT IS THE CURRENT PICTURE? • The courses are very challenging: Texts are more advanced EG poetry, unseen texts. Literature exams are ‘closed book’. • Students need to remember a lot of information for a long time. • Students responded very well to first assessment on poetry – all assessments are conducted in exam conditions (no coursework). Tudor Grange Academy 2016
Slide 26 HOW ARE WE SUPPORTING THE STUDENTS? Notes • Exercise book will be a revision guide. • Text booklets to help organisation and prioritising information. • Pre-study for poetry – independent attempt as ‘unseen’ poem first and then study in class. Interleaving / Revisiting Texts • Keep coming back to texts so students have to revise and remember. This strengthens memory: Eng Lit paper 1 trial exam in June will test Dr Jekyll which is being studied now. Eng Lit paper 2 trial exam in Feb 2018 will test poetry which was studied in Year 10. • Switching topics frequently (interleaving) is proven through various studies and data to increase long-term retention.
