  3. 8 th Grade Transition Highlights

  4. 8 th Grade Transition • First transition event for 8 th graders • June 6 th – over 500 students from North Brandywine, Scott, and South Brandywine in attendance • Students were welcomed by members of the Marching Band, Cheerleaders, and AFJROTC cadets • Middle School Principals presented the 8 th graders to the 9/10 Administration • Chief Red Raider Performance similar to that of the homecoming pep rally for juniors and seniors

  5. 8 th Grade Transition • Students completed an Activity/Athletics interest card. (information will be compiled in a spreadsheet for club advisors and coaches to utilize for contact) • Student Performances (Band, Cheerleaders, AFJROTC, Student Leader presentations, Alma Mater performed)

  6. The Teacher is the Leader of the Classroom The teacher always has the first choice in administering discipline: • The teacher decides whether to handle the situation in class or not. • When the teacher decides to handle the situation in class, the teacher has complete control over the decision of which consequence to present. (detention, phone call home, conference with student, etc. • If the teacher decides to hand off the discipline to the office, then the teacher relinquishes the right to determine the consequence for the infraction.

CHANGES TO CODE OF CONDUCT 2016-2017 • Added “Levels” and infractions contained within each level • Identified parameters within levels for recommended disciplinary consequences • Ensured that the code of conduct is aligned with the Pennsylvania Information Management System (PIMS) Safe Schools Data

Building Changes/Updates • Secure Entrance Summer of 2016 • Main Office Area relocated to the Secure Entrance • Nurses Office to be relocated to 1 st Floor • Attendance area to be relocated to current main office waiting area (2 nd floor) • Assistant Principals to be relocated on 2 nd floor (current guidance) • Guidance Office to move to 3 rd Floor • Security Camera Upgrade

RESPONSIBILITY • KEEP MOVING AND TAKE THE FASTEST ROUTE TO CLASS TO GET THERE ON TIME (DO NOT STAND AROUND BETWEEN CLASSES) • MAKE SURE TO HAVE A PASS WHEN IN THE HALLWAY DURING CLASS TIME. • KEEP TRACK OF YOUR BELONGINGS AND BE AWARE OF WHAT IS IN YOUR POSSESSION > EXAMPLES: CELL PHONES, TABLETS, BOOK BAGS, ETC. • STAY IN DESIGNATED AREAS AND FOLLOW YOUR CLASS SCHEDULE • HELP KEEP OUR BUILDING CLEAN AND ORDERLY • FOLLOW THE SCHOOL DRESS CODE (DO NOT INCONVENIENCE YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIANS TO BRING IN A CHANGE OF CLOTHES)

COURAGE • IGNORE NEGATIVE BEHAVIORS AND DISTRACTIONS AROUND YOU – INCLUDING AVOIDING ANY NEGATIVE INTERACTIONS THAT YOU MAY OBSERVE. • REPORT UNSAFE SITUATIONS TO AN ADULT. • USE AVAILABLE RESOURCES • WALK AWAY FROM A PROBLEM AND SEEK HELP • BE A LEADER – DO THE RIGHT THING AND BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF • TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY – GET INVOLVED

  16. ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS WE EXPECT YOU TO BUILD A SOLID FOUNDATION AS A 9 TH GRADE STUDENT SO THAT YOU CAN EXCEL AND PERFORM AT YOUR HIGHEST LEVEL POSSIBLE THROUGH YOUR 4 YEARS HERE! PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS – YOUR ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE CARE OF THE SMALL THINGS ON A DAILY BASIS IN YOUR CLASSES SO THAT YOUR PROGRESS THROUGH YOUR HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE. WE EXPECT YOU TO ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF AND TO UTILIZE YOUR RESOURCES TO ASSIST YOU DO THIS ALONG THE WAY. AIM HIGH – CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO TAKE HIGHER LEVEL COURSES INCLUDING ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) AT SOME POINT IN YOUR FOUR YEARS IF NOT MULTIPLE ONES.

Student Scheduling Update • Administrators have been meeting and developing the master schedule by content area • Conversations with teachers have been occurring to best provide for our student needs • Scheduling is an ongoing process – encourage your student to challenge themselves and take higher level courses • Objective is to limit student transition between buildings and maintain current opportunities to increase relationship building and safety measures

Daily Bell Schedule • Daily schedule to be discussed from the beginning of the school day, lunches, and end of school day. • Beginning of the day – working with CASD transportation to have drop off times after 7AM to allow for school faculty and staff to be prepared for student entry in the building. • Adjusting the transition time between periods • Lunches – procedures in the cafeteria

  20. What Can You Do As A Parent? • Communicate – if you hear of a potential conflict, please let us know so we can assist in resolving the conflict appropriately • Continue to have discussions with your son or daughter on appropriate behaviors if they observe a potential conflict beginning • Monitor social media sites • Continue to be involved or get involved – policy discussions, Parent Organizations, etc .
