Insurance and Liability If the participants do their Adventurous Journey with their group, an adventure based company or with friends, they or the company assume responsibility. If you take participants on an Adventurous Journey, you must ensure all necessary insurance is in place through your organization or company. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award does not authorize organizations to provide Adventurous Journeys. Adventurous Journeys and the risks associated with them are the sole responsibility of Journey leaders and their respective organizations .
Types of Journeys Expedition focuses on journeying • Purpose of trip is to complete a journey their own power (e.g. Hiking, kayaking, biking, snowshoeing) • Bulk of time spent on completing journey Exploration focuses on studying • Purpose of trip is to complete a study (e.g. Geological survey, historic land use) • Before the trip participants do research on their topic • Bulk of time is spend on completing the study
Types of Journeys Adventurous Project : for youth who need an extra challenge! • Could be biking across Canada or scaling a mountain • Requires pre-approval from Division Office • Participants must be at least 18 years old
What's the Same? There are some key requirements that remain the same for all three Journeys: • Participation in planning • Nights camping outdoors or in simple cabins • Participants cook meals • At least 4 people on trip, with one adult
What is NOT Part of a Journey? • Traveling by motorized transport • Staying in hotels or hotel-like cabins • Journeying through urban environments • Bulk of time spent on games or leisure activities • Shopping during the trip Not ot sur sure? Ask sk us us - we are re ha happy to to cla larify!

Practice Journey • Try your chosen activity (canoeing, hiking, biking…) • Test your equipment (setting up your tent, learning to use the stove, building fires….) • Journey a significant distance • Must be full days Bronze: 1 day (6 hours) Silver: 2 days, 1 night (7 hours) Gold: 2 days, 1 night (8 hours)
3. Qualifying Journey • Journeying a significant distance by your own power • Studying (if an exploration) • Using equipment: setting up tents, cooking with stove, building fires, navigating with compass…) Bronze: 2 days, 1 night (6 hours) Silver: 3 days, 2 nights (7 hours) Gold: 4 days, 3 nights (8 hours)

Adventurous Journey Report Reports don’t have to be boring! The format of the report is flexible. Do a Prezi, write a journal, make a video, create a scrapbook, design a webpage or do an audio recording. As long as all the needed information is included, you can be as creative as you want. You are telling a story and your experiences bring it to life!
The Record Book and Record Book Supplement outline what needs to be included in your report. This includes: • Daily logs • Equipment lists • Menus • Etc. Work in time for reflections and daily logs while the memories and experiences are the freshest!
