Language Arts In ELA, students will develop the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills they will need to be successful in the 21st century. Literacy Interventions Reading intervention is provided in place of the exploratory course for students who need additional support in order to meet grade-level standards in ELA. Reading/Writing Workshop- courses focus on text structure, writing ● about reading, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension skill development through whole-group, small-group, independent reading, and computer-based instruction. Phonics Boost- course focuses on explicit phonics instruction to build ● decoding and comprehension skills.
Math Intervention Math workshop is provided in place of the exploratory course for students who need additional support in order to meet grade level standards in mathematics. Math workshop instruction is primarily delivered in small groups and is focused on the prerequisite skills that directly align to the grade-level standards.
Math & ELA Placement ● Placement decisions are the responsibility of the middle school. ● The WFMS articulation team meets to review each individual student’s data and school history. ● Fifth grade teachers and WFMS staff members meet to discuss recommendations and placement decisions. ● Registration sheets distributed for parent review

Highly Able Learners (HAL) ● Program for students with advanced academic abilities Science, Math, Social Studies and/or Language Arts in grades 6, 7 & 8 ● Provides opportunities for academic rigor and challenge ● Research-based delivery model ● Groups of identified students are flexibly grouped, “clustered” together in an honors class ● School size determines the number of clusters per grade level ● ● Decisions Articulation committee considers all students on a yearly basis ● High performance on a variety of data points and demonstrated ability ● Parents will receive notification letters regarding HAL placement by April 1 ●
Ey Eytended Learning Tj Tjme (ELT) •26 minute period of time •Time for individualized instruction •Increases instructional time for students •Enrichment, extension and intervention •Tutoring – individual and small group •Allows for staff to meet the needs of adolescent learners in a less formal setting

6th Grade Elective Options Your child must take one (1) year-long elective. Elective course offerings are determined by staffing, enrollment and/or school facilities. Because schedule changes may not be possible, electives must be chosen carefully. Students are not guaranteed enrollment in the elective of their choice. Please indicate first preference (1), second preference (2), third preference (3), and fourth preference (4) by writing the number next to the elective course title. Registration Due Date Registration sheets will be distributed the week of March 9th. Registration sheets are due back to 5 th grade teachers on Wednesday, March 18th .
Counselor Visits to Elementary Schools Ms. Johnson (6th grade Counselor) and Ms. Byrd (School Support) will visit each Elementary School to give a presentation to all current 5th grade students regarding course selection. The registration sheets will be handed out at that time.
ChromeBooks?? At WFMS we are a 1:1 school, meaning that every student will be provided a chromebook to rent for the year. Details about this program and distribution will be communicated through FindOutFirst. Can I bring my own?? Yes,FCPS is not responsible for theft or damage to a student’s electronic device. Students are encouraged to record their device’s serial number to have available in case of theft. WFMS encourages students to lock their devices in their lockers when they are not being used. Move Up Day All feeder elementary schools have the opportunity to come tour WFMS during the school day in May.
