  1. Welcome to MA 16010! 1 /

  2. Course Information ● All basic course information can be found on the course webpage ● Syllabus ● Calendar ● Course announcements ● Additional class resources 2 /

  3. LON-CAPA ● Homework, quizzes, and exams can be found on LON-CAPA ● Due dates are also posted here ● Everything can be found in the “Contents” tab ● In addition to assignments, there are some video and written examples on LON-CAPA ● Each question has a set number of attempts – Most have 99 tries, but not all! 3 /

  4. Brightspace ● LON-CAPA will sync grades to Brightspace where you can view them ● My recorded lectures can be found in the “Kaltura Media Gallery” – You also have access to every other instructor’s recordings ● There may be technical issues with Boilercast this first week :/ 4 /

  5. Piazza ● There is a Piazza discussion board for this class ● Any MA 16010 student can ask questions about homework, studying, etc. ● The instructors as well as fellow students can answer questions 5 /

  6. Matt’s Website ● I keep a personal webpage for my students ● I’ll post pdf’s of my lecture notes from class – Videos of these notes will be on Brightspace ● I’ll also post some past exam solutions eventually ● There will be extra credit opportunities eventually and I’ll post them here 6 /

  7. Quizzes ● There will be 12 quizzes this semester ● Each is worth 8 points ● Quizzes will appear on LON-CAPA eventually ● You will have a 24-hour window to take each quiz ● You will have 10 minutes to complete each quiz once you begin 7 /

  8. Exams ● There will be 3 midterm exams and then a final exam – The final will be like a 4 th midterm ● Each exam is worth 100 points ● You will have a 72 hour window to take each exam ● You will have 60 minutes to complete each exam after you begin 8 /

  9. Calculator Policy ● You may use any calculator you have or any online calculator application ● You should only use it for numerical computation – Some graphing calculators and online tools are capable of doing much much more, but it is important to learn the processes instead of relying on an online source 9 /

  10. Academic Dishonesty ● Purdue has a zero-tolerance policy for academic dishonesty ● Obviously it’s much harder to enforce with online homework, quizzes, and exams ● Instructors will look into anything that appears suspicious 10 /

  11. Late Work ● If you are unable to complete any assignment in the given time window let me know immediately! ● If you miss any assignment, you must contact me within 48 hours to be eligible for consideration of an extension – You might need documentation (like a doctor’s note) ● Just email me and we’ll figure it out 11 /

  12. Quarantine/Isolation due to COVID-19 ● If you have to be isolated due to COVID-19 you will have access to a temporary academic advisor who will ensure you receive the course materials you need ● Send me an email as well so I can share some course materials with you ● You will still have access to videos and the other online materials 12 /

  13. Grades ● The total points/grade breakdowns can be found in the syllabus (on the course website) ● The grade cut-offs are already determined – You can see exactly how many points you need for the grade you want ● Homework is worth 5 points and the lowest 4 assignments are dropped ● Quizzes are worth 8 points and the lowest 2 are dropped 13 /

  14. Extra Credit ● There will be 4 extra credit opportunities ● The first will be an exam readiness survey a week or so before exam 1 ● The other 3 will up to me – Probably a worksheet graded for completion – I’ll email you and post them on my website 14 /

  15. Office Hours ● Office hours will be virtual this semester ● Depending on the schedule you will be able to Zoom/WebEx with a MA 16010 instructor – Might not be me necessarily ● You can still email me questions or we can find time to Zoom and I’d be happy to help! 15 /

  16. Protect Purdue Plan ● All aspects of the Protect Purdue Policy apply within the classroom ● Everybody must wear a mask at all times in the classroom ● No eating or drinking in the classroom is permitted ● The desks are not allowed to be moved in order to keep proper distancing ● At the end of class, please wipe down your desk area 16 /

  17. Protect Purdue (cont.) ● Any violation of these policies will have consequences – Disciplinary measures may be implemented ● If you feel sick stay home and contact PPHC ● If you at any time feel unsafe in the classroom you may leave without consequence 17 /
