Reading with your child Books will be changed on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays When listening to your child, encourage your child to use picture cues & phonic knowledge to word build ‘Sounding out’ is an important stage in early reading, even if the storyline is not flowing. You could re-read the sentence, so your child can understand the meaning If your child is feeling tired or reluctant to read, decide to share the reading: one page each. Little & often is best! Please record how your child read in the record book, commenting on how they tackled tricky words, or which words were new to him/her, or how well your child understood the text Snuggling up for a bedtime story is very special & you are welcome to record which books you have shared together in the reading record, too
Maths Maths includes counting, partitioning & calculating number, data handling, measuring & understanding shape Please encourage your child to sort objects, count large amounts of objects & to predict amounts Cooking together at home is valuable when thinking about weighing and capacity Please encourage your child to play with & handle real coins. Money is a tricky concept & more real life practice really helps! Telling the time using o’clock and half past on analogue clocks will really help your child, too
Literacy In June, all Year 1 children in the country are tested using the ‘Y1 Phonic Screening Check’. You will be informed whether your child has passed in July. Sometimes, children need to re-take the test in Year 2 In pre-writing, we focus on ‘Talk for Writing’ When children can talk fluently about a story or their ideas, they are ready to write In writing we focus on sentence making, including grammar & punctuation, comprehension, composition, spelling & vocabulary. We try to make our writing purposeful.
Woodland School Every other Tuesday afternoon the children will have woodland school This provides opportunities for the children to explore outside of the classroom and learn about their immediate surroundings Based around what they are learning in Science Go out in all weathers Please send children with appropriate clothing for the weather - old comfy clothing - arms and legs covered. If you have waterproof trousers, they could be kept for rainy weather & extra layers will be needed as it gets colder.
Next steps in learning & independence Your child will begin to organise him/herself Independence in learning is encouraged by using our visual timetable, locating our own resources, using our classroom to help ourselves Together, we have devised our own Class Charter Each child has their name on the happy sunshine, etc. Each day is a new start! We also encourage collaboration to earn ‘spots’ for a class treat!
