ARC Overview ● Creating kids who love to read!
ARC Overview ● Students will read a lot! 3rd Grade Core Text Novel Studies. ○ Students will read, write, and discuss various types of ■ text. Standards and skills will be taught through these daily core text lessons. Kindergarten and 1st students are taught reading ○ standards/skills through daily read alouds.
ARC Overview Morning Message in Kindergarten and 1st Grade ● Interactive writing time ■ Compose the morning message together as a class ■ Reinforces the foundational skills students will use in ■ their reading and writing.
ARC Overview ● Independent Reading Time ● Students read books on their independent reading level in class for 30 minutes during the school day. ● Students are working to build their reading stamina. ● Teacher will conference with students individually.
ARC Overview ● Reading Conferencing/Small Group Instruction Teachers meet with students one on one or in small ○ groups throughout the week. Focus on individual student reading goals. ○ Allow teachers to know their students at a deeper ○ level. Teachers focus on identifying reading strengths and ○ identifying needs of each student to help them grow as a reader.

Power Goals Each student is assigned a Power Goal ● Power Goals are the MOST important ● skills that the student needs to learn within their color level Power Goals can change daily, weekly ● or monthly depending on progress and depth of the skill Students will work on Power Goals in ● small groups, independently, one-on-one, and at home

ARC Parent Involvement Help your child LOVE reading! ● Parents are “home coaches” who support their children through ● nightly reading Students will bring home books each day from school to practice ● reading A colored skills card will come home daily to help parents ● understand what students need to work on through Power Goals Students can read any books at home! ● ARC leveled books coming from school ○ Library books ○ MyOn ○ Home libraries ○
Reading Steps ● Reading Steps ○ steps=time reading ■ 1 step=15 minutes, 2 steps=30 minutes ○ 3o minutes of independent reading at school ○ 30 minutes of independent reading at home ■ K/1st- Parent reading and student reading ■ 3rd- Student independent reading ● Reading Logs
Reading Logs Kindergarten and 1st Grade ● Monday-Thursday ○ students should record reading 30 minutes at home (2 steps) Friday, Saturday or ○ Sunday students should read 30 minutes total (2 steps)

Reading Steps on Holidays ● Forsyth County does not require home reading during major holiday breaks in the school year ○ Labor Day (September 2) ○ Fall Break (September 30-October 4) ○ Winter Break ○ Student Holidays (February 18, March 13) ○ Spring Break (April 6-10)
Book Replacement Plan In order to continue to provide our ARC books to our ● students, we must replace books that have been lost or damaged while at home. Option 1- You may purchase any book from the same color ● level from the ARC Home Bookstore. https://www.americanreadingathome.com/bookstore/ Option 2- You may donate $5.00-$15.00 for each lost or ● damaged book and the school will purchase new books.
