WHAT DID WE LEARN? SERIOUS CONCERNS EXIST IN CERTAIN POPULATIONS WHICH LEADS TO LOWER WATER CONSUMPTION
What do you choose most often when you’re thirsty? 49% chose bottled water or sugary drinks instead of tap water When you drink water, what kind do you choose? Nearly 60% chose bottled or filtered water instead of tap water KEY QUANTITATIVE Where do you feel safe drinking tap water? FINDINGS 17% felt unsafe at home; 31% at school; 33% at work; 52% at public fountains Tap vs. bottled water: which one wins? Bottled water was safer (43%), cleaner (53%), and better tasting (52%) Do your perceptions impact your behaviors? 30% spent money on bottled water because they don’t think tap water is safe
KEY QUALITATIVE THEMES Respondents cited concerns about taste, color, odor, visible particles, and temperature . They would be more motivated to trust tap water quality if: • City officials provided more information • Landlords replaced lead pipes • Residents received free filters , test kits , reusable water bottles • Schools and parks added hydration stations
BASED ON THESE RESULTS, WE MAY PURSUE… • CREATING A CITYWIDE CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE MINNEAPOLIS TAP WATER • DISTRIBUTING PERSONAL TAP WATER TEST KITS OR WATER FILTERS • MAKING WATER THE DEFAULT DRINK IN KIDS MEALS AND CONCESSIONS • ADOPTING POLICIES TO MAKE SUGARY DRINKS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN WATER • HOSTING TAP WATER TASTE TESTS • REPLACING DRINKING FOUNTAINS WITH HYDRATION STATIONS • DISTRIBUTING REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES • ARRANGING GROUP TOURS OF THE MINNEAPOLIS WATER TREATMENT FACILITY • INCENTIVIZING PROPERTY OWNERS TO REPLACE LEAD PIPES AND FIXTURES
