  5. WHY Do We Need a 9 th Grade Campus?  Our 9 th grade students are our most vulnerable students  We currently have 9 th transition, 10 th transition and the joining of 2 middle schools  Nearly all graduation issues trace back to grades 9 and 10  24 credit graduation requirement is coming (current 7 th graders) and this is a significant increase.  9 th grade students need strong four year plan

  6. HOW will a 9 th grade campus help our students?  One transition to high school  Nearly all coursework on the 9 th grade wing  Regular and planned integration into high school life (assemblies, activities, events)  Full participation in co-curricular sports and activities  9 th grade only guidance counseling  Strong mentoring from/with student leaders  Strong orientation program in August  Some “ walk-over ” to academic programs in math, arts and eventually Advanced Placement  By June, ready for full integration with 10-12 students

  7. WHAT would a 9 th Grade Campus in Yelm be like ?  Separate building or wing located by the current greenhouses and Auto Shop (2 minute walk from office)  Would be part of a 9-12 High School campus  School within a school concept  9 th grade students would gradually be integrated into all high school operations  Have its own guidance counselor  On site administrator and support staff

  8. WHAT would a 9 th Grade Campus in Yelm be like?  Support up to 450 9 th grade students  9 th teachers more direct work with HS teachers for curriculum alignment  Core program math, science, English, Tech Comm, PE, Health  Electives  World Language, Arts, and Career & Technical Education (CTE)

  9. WHY will the 9 th grade campus be successful?  Develop sense of independence and of their class. Team approach to coming together as a high school   All structures support students as high schoolers  Teaching and support staff committed to needs of 9 th graders  Strong 9 th grade guidance counseling. High school and beyond plan, college and career readiness planning  Smaller location helps build supports for all students.  Reduce F rates  Increase on time graduation rates  Decrease rates of school discipline  We are all YHS Tornados!  Transition is gradual and planned  Teach HS traditions is one smaller setting  Renaissance/PATH activities with high school

  10. WHEN would this building be ready and WHAT would it contain?  Open Fall 2018  Current 6 th grade students will be first group (Class of 2022)  410 students currently in 6 th grade  Approximately 20 teachers  Facility would include:  Gym and Commons/Eating Area  Office and Bus Loop  Safe path to main campus  Second exit from YHS campus
