  13. Mock Exams Commence 18 th November 2019

  14. 1. The Basics  Provide a quiet space for study  Help to reduce distractions: smart phones should be removed until study session is over; research shows that listening to music during study time actually reduces concentration – no matter how much students insist they “need” it!  Ensure your son/daughter takes plenty of breaks  Ensure any discussion or chat around revision or exams is positive

  15. 2. Revision Timetable  Once a revision timetable has been devised, place it/a copy in a central area  Chat about what’s been done, what’s still to do, how it’s going, (being positive), are there any events coming up that might mean changing study sessions around etc

  16. 3. Strategies for revision - Spaced Practice

  17. 3 . Strategies for revision - Interleaving

  18. 3. Strategies for revision – Retrieval practice

  19. 3. Strategies for revision – Quizzing/recall • Self-quizzing • Teach it back • Timed response • Summarise • Flash cards • Revision clocks

  20. Summarising key information to mind-maps and/or flash cards

  21. Remember… • Reading over notes and highlighting are not effective revision strategies! Very little will be retained. • Summarising, condensing, repeating information, making links, and quizzing will all help to ensure knowledge is “fixed” in the long term memory. • Once it’s in the long term memory, something has been learned.

  22. Science – Exam board information • All Science GCSEs are administered by the AQA board. • The courses are: • Combined science: Trilogy (double award) • Biology • Chemistry • Physics

  23. Science – Key information • 1 st Exam Tuesday 12th May 2020 (Biology) • 6 Exams in total (2 in Biology, 2 in Chemistry, 2 in Physics) • No coursework • Combined science – exams are 1hr 15mins • Separate Sciences – exams are 1hr 45mins • Combined science students will achieve a single qualification called combined science worth 2 GCSEs. Grades will look like this 6- 6 or 8-7. • Separate science students will achieve 3 grades e.g. Biology 6, Chemistry 7, Physics 9.

  24. Support in School • Monday night STEP – Small group targeted intervention • Wednesday night • Physics GCSE drop in • Chemistry GCSE drop in • Thursday night • Biology GCSE drop in • Revision guides available to order from Monday 7 th October via the parent app and parent pay. (Many students already have one)

  26. English Language and English Literature GCSE • Two distinct qualifications. • Important in terms of any career Revision guides will be available through Parent Pay and differ for each student. path. • Help and revision available We recommend one guide for English Language and separate shorter guides for throughout the year: English Literature. • Step, English Language – Reading and writing • Exam Revision, fiction/non-fiction. • Drop in, English Literature: • Poet-tea. An Inspector Calls, Power and Conflict poetry, Romeo &Juliet / Macbeth A 19 th Century Novel

  27. The percentage of 16-year-old students in England sitting higher in summer 2016 was 76% 2017 2018 2019 2020 Higher Foundation Higher Foundation Higher Foundation Higher Foundation National 53% 47% 56% 44% 57% 43% EMS 65% 35% 67% 33% 64% 36% 65% 35%

  28. • Students given homework every Friday • Students hand in homework on a Tuesday • Teachers give students feedback on a Thursday NOTE: Teachers go over similar questions on a Friday to help students with the homework due on a Tuesday https://www.mathsgenie.co.uk/gcse.html lmurray@ems.hartlepool.sch.uk
