  5. Contents  Recipient: Titus: A close friend of Paul and gentile convert entrusted with finishing the organizing the churches on Crete. It covers many of the same issues as 1 Timothy  Context: Epimenides paradox: “All Cretans are Lairs …” Difficult assignment!  Composition:  Pastor Qualifications  Connection of Christian’s acceptance of the Gospel and their conduct  False teachers

  6. Epimenides paradox  Verse 12 One of their very own prophets said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.

  7. Chapter 1(NCV) 5 I left you in Crete so you could finish doing the things that still needed to be done and so you could appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. 6 An elder must not be guilty of doing wrong, must have only one wife, and must have believing children. They must not be known as children who are wild and do not cooperate. 7 As God’s managers, overseers must not be guilty of doing wrong, being selfish, or becoming angry quickly. They must not drink too much wine, like to fight, or try to get rich by cheating others. 8 Overseers must be ready to welcome guests, love what is good, be wise, live right, and be holy and self-controlled. 9 By holding on to the trustworthy word just as we teach it, overseers can help people by using true teaching, and they can show those who are against the true teaching that they are wrong.

  8. Chapter 1 (NCV) 7 As God’s managers, overseers must not be guilty of doing wrong, being selfish, or becoming angry quickly.

  9. Chapter 1 (HCSB) 13 This testimony is true. So, rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith 14 and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of men who reject the truth. 15 To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and disqualified for any good work.

  10. Chapter 1:15 Amplified Bible To the pure [in heart and conscience] all things are pure, but to the defiled and corrupt and unbelieving nothing is pure; their very minds and consciences are defiled and polluted.

  11. Epistle to Titus CHAPTER 2: “LEARN IT, LIVE IT, SHARE IT”

  12. There is a problem with Check list faith… it produces the egoist walking in self- righteousness

  13. There is a problem with Check list faith… it produces the Self-deprecating person walking in self-righteous self-condemnation and fear

  14. Both are wrong Problem with the checklist is we are getting close to the “Pharisee trap”
