Today, we will examine the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. You will identify why the Articles of Confederation needed to be changed. You will need 1 post-it each for the first activity!!!
You need 1 post-it: ON YOUR OWN: CHOOSE 1 QUESTION AND ANSWER IT ON A POST-IT. PLACE IT UNDER THE CORRECT COLUMN ON THE WHITEBOARD.
Back to the point….. The Articles of Confederation (AOC) were created as the nation’s first set of rules after the war with Britain that would help us govern ourselves since Britain didn’t govern us anymore, but we overlooked some things that made these rules a problem.... LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT I MEAN….
Weaknesses of the As we continue, let’s try to determine which of these ideas is supported by our text. Use your organizer I have given you.
Get Ready…. Let Me Show You How to approach the following sentence frame:
Which idea on your hand organizer do you think the Articles of Confederation will affect based off of this information? Because the text says _____________ I think the (color) will be affected.
Remember: CONGRESS CREATES!
Get Ready….
This is what happens when the government gets too much power…. “monarchy!!”
So the AoC were designed with a limited power government in mind to avoid history repeating itself! The Intolerable Acts….. Remember the Stamp, Sugar and Tea Acts? Can’t pay money to someone if they have their own kind of money…. Think of us trying to use American dollars in Europe… nope.
Congress gave the states the power to tax their own states. Because they all had different currency, and sometimes the states would pay some of it to the government, the government could not pay back their national loans from foreign countries. So, foreign countries would not accept “foreign” money, so we stayed in debt.

Speaking of …
Try Together: T=Stand Up F=Sit on the Floor The Articles of Confederation gave the states more power than the central government, so it was difficult for the government to enforce rules.

But first…. Do you recall the 5 main weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation?
Great! Back to the point... These 5 things didn’t just “go away.” They caused a reaction by the people, called Shay’s Rebellion. Just like when your parents use their fingers to count to 5 before you get in trouble… colonists felt this way about the new government and what they have been doing. LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT I MEAN...
Daniel Shays- Revolutionary War Veteran Farmers (and other citizens) joined the Patriots militia and fought in the American Revolution. BUT, they did not receive pay. So, in order to keep their farms running while they were gone, they had to take out loans. If farmers couldn’t pay their loans back (which most couldn’t) then they were put in jail until families paid the debts back. Daniel, and other farmers, were getting angry about how the new government was not taking care of their people.
● Farmers were put in jail if they did not pay the money they owed ● Farmers were getting angry about the government
He started a rebellion with many other farmers in Massachusetts to prevent the imprisonment of debt-ridden citizens. When the government couldn’t stop the rebellion, a privately funded militia had to be formed to stop it after 6 months. This rebellion showed many weaknesses about our central government.
Cause= they were unhappy that they were not being treated by their states government Effect= An act of civil disobedience through a rebellion.
RIGHT!! THE BOSTON TEA PARTY! Nice Recall!!
The central government was unable to stop the rebellion of Shay and his followers because the central government had no power over the states, no military set up…
SOOOOO……… Shay’s rebellion did not succeed but it was determined that a change was needed to solve the many problems created by the Articles of Confederation. This rebellion is important because it is one of the major events that led to the writing of the new Constitution. AoC- think “Ancient Constitution” - first set of rules for the new government Constitution- became new set of rules for the new government (we’ll discuss this at a later time)
