Parent Resource o Services is willing to come to your school and provide parent workshops on s p e c i f i c topics (exp. I E P p r o c e s s ) . Ask y o u r Principal t o host a “parent coffee” to orient I E P parents on the special e d u c a t i o n s t r u c t u r e at y o u r school a n d to provide o t h e r opportunities to meet a n d provide overviews on topics of specific interest at your school ( e x p . Assistive t e c h n o l o g y , peer mentor programs, etc.). For “transition years” (rising K i n d e r g a r t e n , r i s i n g 6 t h a n d r i s i n g 9th) ask your Principal to h o s t special a orientation s e s s i o n to focus on t h e u n i c q u e i r c u m s t a n c e s of a s t u d e n t with an IEP matriculating to t h e next level ( E C S E to ES, ES t o MS, MS t o HS, HS to s e c o n d a r y education/adult l i f e ) .

Accessibility Strategies • Work with parent organizations and administration to e n s u r e school events are accessible. • Offer a quiet room near the event for s t u d e n t s w h o m a y become o v e r - s t i m u l a t e d ( o f f e r a l t e a c t i r n a t e v i t y such as: video, books, coloring etc.). • Music/Entertainment consider students with auditory p r o c e s s i n g i s s u e s ; - see v o l i f u m e c a n b e l o w e r e d . Also consider s t u d e n t s who h a v e s e i z u r e disorders i f s lights t r o b e will b e u s e d as this could trigger a seizure. - • Help c o o r d i n a t e p e e r s u p p o r t for activities s o that s t u d e n t s a r e r e a l l y a part of the activity. • Work with administration to determine i f a Sign L a n g u a g e interpreter i s needed at PTA, P T O or school events.
