The first national agricultural census in the new economic environment was held in Russia in July 2006 The importance of the Census ‒ The last agricultural census was conducted in Russia in 1920 ‒ Specialized agricultural censuses were periodically carried out (censuses of crops acreage, fruit plantations and vineyards, livestock) ‒ There were significant structural changes in agricultural sector of economy ‒ Restructuring of statistical monitoring of agriculture (enumeration censuses, sample surveys) The concept of the Census, its program and methodology were developed according to the recommendations of the UN FAO and other international organizations 2 FEDERAL STATE STATISTICS SERVICE
Scope of the Census 2006 The Census covered: - 59,2 thousand agricultural organizations and businesses - 253,1 thousand farms - 32,0 thousand individual entrepreneurs - 22,8 million private subsidiary farms and other private holdings - 80.3 thousand gardening, horticulture, dacha non-profit associations, including 14 million individual land holdings 200 thousand temporary enumerators were involved in the Census 250 million questionnaire forms were processed and scanned 3 FEDERAL STATE STATISTICS SERVICE
The results of the Census 2006 were published in 9 volumes (12 books) by constituents of Russia and contain the following data: • A number of census objects by farm types, legal forms, and activities • Labour force: ‒ a number of employees in organizations, farms and individual entrepreneurs by sex, age, level of education ‒ private households by a number of persons employed in agricultural work • Land: ‒ land area and structure by farm type ‒ actually used farmland area ‒ area of abandoned land • Areas of crops and perennial plants: ‒ a wide range of crops and perennial plants, their structure by farm types and species ‒ acreage planted with elite seeds and their share ‒ measures to improve soil fertility 4 FEDERAL STATE STATISTICS SERVICE
continuation • Livestock (number of animals): - by farm types, age and sex groups, their structure - number of breeding farm animals and their share • Technical facilities, production facilities and infrastructure: - availability of agricultural machinery - availability of tractors and combine harvesters in the farm - presence of industrial buildings - availability of infrastructural facilities • Groups of farms by availability and use of resources and production capabilities: - an annual average number of employees - the size of land area - major crop acreage - livestock (main types of farm animals) - availability of tractors and combine harvester threshers The Census 2006 results were compiled not only on subfederal level but also by 27 thousand of urban and rural settlements 5 FEDERAL STATE STATISTICS SERVICE
