Use of Red Mud in soil remediation: review of applications and challenges Valérie CAPPUYNS Centre for Economics and Corporate sustainability KU Leuven, 1000 Brussels, Belgium valerie.cappuyns@kuleuven.be
Introduction • RM is efficient for the removal of various aquatic pollutants, from waste waters • use of RM as amendment to immobilize contaminants in soil received less attention • => critically review the existing literature dealing with the use of RM to immobilise PTEs in soils
Results
Conclusion • long term effects still not fully understood • more attention for the long-term efficiency of RM to immobilize PTEs is necessary: more field studies! • properly assess the feasibility and effectiveness of RM in environmental remediation • more attention for the bio-availability of PTEs in red-mud treated soils
