Literature Review • Local Documents – 5 City of Urbana documents – 18 Related Area documents • Other Bicycle Plans – 4 Peer Midwest Cities • 3 Big Ten cities – 2 Large Midwest Cities – 5 Model U.S. Cities
Off-Street Bike Counts • Sidepaths parallel to roads • 26 locations • Highest counts: 50-80 cyclists – Race St. – University Ave. – Goodwin Ave. – Florida Ave. – Philo Rd.
Off-Street Facilities • Shared-Use Paths (Trail) – Sidepaths • Parallel to road • For busier, faster roads without many crossings – Off-Street • Between neighborhoods • Through parks • Rail-Trails • Utility easements • Waterway corridors • Bike Paths
On-Road Bike Counts • 2011-2013 • 21 locations • Highest counts: 250- 825 cyclists – Illinois St. – Goodwin Ave. – Pennsylvania Ave. – Main St.
On-Road Facilities • Bike Lanes – Both sides of the road – Minimum width w/ curb: 5’ – Stripe defines car/bike space • Sharrows – Indicates proper bike position in shared lane – Can be used at intersections – Can be used on streets with or without parking
On-Road Facilities • Bike Routes – Shared roadways – Signs should include: • Destination • Distance • Direction • Shared Bike/Parking Lanes – Low parking occupancy – Not exclusive “bike lanes,” but more like paved shoulder with Bike Route signage
Other Considerations • Road Diets – Restripe from 4-5 lanes to 3 lanes to accommodate bike lanes • Bike Boulevards – Bike-priority streets – Discourages thru car travel • Drainage Grates • Stoplight Activation
Other Considerations • Bicycle Parking – Recommended: • Inverted U racks • Post and Loop – Many other types are acceptable – Covered – Corral – Lockers
Bike/Vehicle Crashes • 2008-2012: 66 crashes – 5 years – Most recent data • Concentrations: – U of I Campus – Lincoln Ave. – Cunningham Ave.
