Welcome First, a little bit of history.... Sixty years after their foundation in Cork, the Presentation Congregation fjrst arrived in Tuam in 1835 and very shortly afterwards they began to open and run schools. Our Secondary School was established in 1852, with boarders joining the day pupils in 1890. Our school moved to its current building in 1972, with the Boarding School closing in 1991. Since then we have continued to improve and develop our school building, recently expanding into our Transition Year block, and adding new courts. Today, we are an all-inclusive girls day school, accommodating up to 500 students. Our Mission Statement.... The vision of the staff of Presentation College is to give an all-embracing, well-balanced Christian education to each individual student and to ensure that a caring ethos permeates all activities in the school. We endeavour to create a stable environment which will allow students to develop morally, emotionally, intellectually, physically and spiritually, giving them a love for learning, developing self esteem and confjdence and preparing them for life. CEIST – Catholic Education, an Irish Schools Trust Presentation Currylea is part of the CEIST family, a trusteeship of 112 voluntary secondary schools, which took over from the Presentation Sisters and four other congregations in May 2007. CEIST aims to nurture and support the Catholic ethos of Presentation Currylea and other similar schools so that parents and young people can continue to have the opportunity to receive a values-based education within the Irish system. Catholic schools welcome students of all faith traditions and those of no faith precisely because the schools are Catholic and are thus open to dialogue with others. Dear Parent.... This prospectus aims to introduce you to our school, and our educational philosophy. As a staff we: • Encourage an atmosphere of respect for every person, both within and outside our school. • Create a supportive community, which recognises individuality and values diversity. • Challenge each student to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives, encouraging them to strive for excellence spiritually, morally and intellectually. • Expect students to behave in a responsible manner which ensures the safety of others, and maintains an environment in which teaching and learning can take place. • Provide a Christian community in which we aim to display Gospel values in our every day lives. We offer a wide range of activities to promote spiritual and personal development, and to develop awareness of civil and social responsibilities. • Pursue academic excellence by offering a comprehensive subject choice, excellent facilities and professional, enthusiastic and well qualifjed teachers. • Want your daughter to be happy, fulfjlled, secure and challenged. We hope to create an environment in which she can explore her interests and achieve her goals as she progresses toward adulthood “ Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each. ” Plato 3 Presentation college, currylea, tuam pres prospectus body.indd 3 03/01/2012 18:01

Senior Subject Choices We are proud to offer the opportunity to our senior students to study a comprehensive range of subjects including the sciences, humanities, business, arts and languages. The choice of subject at Leaving Certifjcate level is a very big decision for students. Our aim is to enable every girl to choose subjects that develop her strengths and interests, regardless of what those might be. Our students sometimes choose three unrelated subjects to maintain a breadth of study. Others may well choose to concentrate on a particular group of subjects with a view to a particular Third Level course, for example, any girl wanting to study dentistry would need to include at least two science subjects in her choices. We take great care to help our students with their subject choices. We have a well established work experience program, and good relationships with local employers and colleges. Careers evenings feature in the annual calendar, and representatives from Third Level institutions visit the school to speak to students. When the time fjnally comes to make a decision about life after Presentation Currylea, support and help is on offer from our career guidance teacher and our experienced staff. Visits to college open days are arranged, and assistance is given with preparation for interviews and C.A.O. applications. “Chemistry is challenging but fascinating. The experiments are surprisingly thrilling.” Leaving Cert Chemistry Student A few thoughts and comments from our seniors about their option subjects.... “ Music is a wonderful subject for those who enjoy playing and listening to all musical genres. I came to the school not knowing much about music, and now I hope to study it at university.” “I like Art as it offers a break from the constant bookwork of Leaving Cert. It allows me to express myself through drawing and painting.” “ Biology is an interesting subject that never ceases to amaze us. It helps us better understand the functions of our bodies, as well as those of other living things.” “ Agricultural Science makes you look at nature and food in a different way. It is a very enjoyable subject.” 5 Presentation college, currylea, tuam pres prospectus body.indd 5 03/01/2012 18:01
“ Home Economics is a very practical subject. You learn about things that are useful in life such as nutrition and technology in the home.” “ Physics is challenging, but surprisingly relevant to everyday life and provides fascinating insights into things we take for granted.” “ History helps us understand not only the past, but learn lessons for the future. We get a real insight into how people think and the decisions they make.” “ Geography covers a surprising number of subject areas, from plate tectonics to economics. Really fascinating!” “I fjnd Accounting a really practical subject. It provides great satisfaction and it is easy to track your own progress. There is great teamwork and camaraderie in the class.” Compulsory English, Irish, Mathematics Optional Accounting, Agricultural Science, French or German, Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Geography, History, Home Economics, Japanese, L.C.V.P., Music, Physics. Non-Examination Careers, P.E., Religion “Business is interesting as it deals with topics which are familiar from our daily lives. It is very easy to see how it will be of use and relevance in my future.” In Presentation Currylea we are confjdent that it is no exaggeration to say that we have one of the best 6 Presentation college, currylea, tuam pres prospectus body.indd 6 03/01/2012 18:01
