Strategic Geographical Position
History u San Marino is the most ancient republic in Europe (301 A.D.) but also one of the smallest independent countries (61,196 km 2 and 32.821citizens) u The origins of this history are tied to the legendary story of its Saint, Marino, a stonecutter who came from his native island of Arbe in Dalmatia in 257 A.D. to the peak of Mount Titano and founded a small community of Christians there, to escape the persecution they suffered for their faith under Emperor Diocletian. The first community of the Republic was formed around him in 301 A.D., then as in many other cities of Italy and Europe, the citizens expressed their will to establish a form of government and the community evolved into “Comune”, i.e. “City-state” and finally into “Republic”. u On 7 th July 2008 UNESCO declared “San Marino is one of the most ancient Republics in the world and the only surviving City-State. It represents an important step in the development of models of democracy in Europe and around the World.”
The University of San Marino (UniRSM) Established in 1985 as official State University of the Republic of San Marino and u as such recognized at international level It developed around the Advanced School of Historical Studies directed by u important intellectuals and scholars which then evolved into the International Doctorate in Historical Studies. In the late 90’s several Master Courses were activated in specialized fields such u as: Management of Sporting Companies, Criminology, Marketing and Communication. The first undergraduate degree of the University of San Marino was Industrial u Design, established in 2005, followed by Civil Engineering (both undergraduate and graduate degrees) in 2007, the undergraduate degree in Management Engineering, and the graduate program in Design in 2012 The undergraduate and graduate programs and the Masters are held in u collaboration with Italian Universities and provide students with a joint degree title internationally recognized. Through the law of 2014 the structure of UniRSM was competely reorganized u following the European model
International Research Doctorate in Historical Studies u 3 years program with 2 class sessions in San Marino per year u 9 scholarships each cycle fully funded by UniRSM u From 100 to 150 requests of admission for a maximum of 30 places available each cycle: candidates are graduates in history or associated discilplines from around the world and are selected on the basis of a competitive assessment of qualifications, exams, and curricula. u The Doctorate is distinguished by the interdisciplinary nature of the education offered to the students and by the presence of some of the leading figures in historical and humanistic studies as teachers u Out of the class session periods, students conduct their research in the most appropriate locations (in any part of Europe), selected in agreement with their designated professor and with the Scientific Council of the School.
Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees in Design u Reference point for a new concept of Design: no more only industrial and product but 360 deg Design (social, human, civic, relation, ecc.) u Professors and teachers are all experts in their respective sectors and small size classes allow a proficuous teacher-student interaction u High number of hours of laboratories and practical classes, and Summer Workshops sessions in collaboration with famous designers worldwide, as integral part of the degree plan u Mandatory staging period before graduation u Research Projects in several different fields and countries (also in developing 3° World areas)
Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees in Civil Engineering u Initially focused on Civil Works and Constructions, more recently was redirected to infrastructures, anti-seismic and environmental protection u Research projects in collaborations with local companies, Public Administration Departments and State-owned firms u Both teachers and students can collaborate to projects for the development of the territory of San Marino u First in Italy, UniRSM offers a specialized undergraduate degree in Construction Engineering (according to 2020 European new regulation)
Undergraduate Degree in Management Engineering u The course was activated due to the increasing demand for Managers with technical background u Graduating students have the opportunity to intern at private firms and also in the Public Health Institute (ISS) of San Marino and working on actual projects u Due to the success of the program the University is planning to open a graduate course of Management Engineering, following the 3+2 cycle of study

Challenge and Opportunities u Funding: UNiRSM needs more support from the State and access to EU and international research funds u Students Dorms: we need facilities to host both UniRSM and mobility students u Implementing of English courses u Developing research and international networks u Opening of San Marino to the rest of the world
