WHAT IS A SCRIBE? CAPHAR – H5608 “TO COUNT” “TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF” “TO COUNT EXACTLY” 3
EZRA 7:1,6,8-10 Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, there went up Ezra son of Seraiah , son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah … This Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses, which YHWH God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all he requested because the hand of YHWH his God was upon him … He came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. For on the first of the first month he began to go up from Babylon; and on the first of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, because the good hand of his God was upon him. For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of YHWH and to practice it , and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel. 4
PROVERBS 1:1-7 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel, are for learning about wisdom and discipline; for understanding words expressing deep insight; for gaining an intelligently disciplined life, doing what is right, just and fair; for endowing with caution those who don’t think and the young person with knowledge and discretion. Someone who is already wise will hear and learn still more; someone who already understands will gain the ability to counsel well; he will understand proverbs, obscure expressions, the sayings and riddles of the wise. The fear of YHWH is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. 5
GENESIS 18:20-25,32; 19:1,3-7,9,15,24-25 And YHWH said, “The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave. I will go down now, and see if they have done entirely according to its outcry, which has come to Me; and if not, I will know.” Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before YHWH. Abraham came near and said, “Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?” … Then he said, “Oh may YHWH not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the ten.” 6
GENESIS 18:20-25,32; 19:1,3-7,9,15,24-25 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them , he rose to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. He urged them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he prepared a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. Before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter; and they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them.” But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him, and said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly.” But they said, “Stand aside.” Furthermore, they said, “This one came in as an alien, and already he is acting like a judge; now we will treat you worse than them.” So they pressed hard against Lot and came near to break the door. When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.” Then YHWH rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from YHWH out of heaven, and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 7
PSALM 23 THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH 8
JEREMIAH 38:1-5 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah heard the words that Jeremiah was speaking to all the people, saying, “Thus says YHWH, ‘He who stays in this city will die by the sword and by famine and by pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans will live and have his own life as booty and stay alive.’ Thus says YHWH, ‘This city will certainly be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and he will capture it.’” Then the officials said to the king, “Now let this man be put to death, inasmuch as he is discouraging the men of war who are left in this city and all the people, by speaking such words to them; for this man is not seeking the well-being of this people but rather their harm.” So King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands; for the king can do nothing against you.” 9
JEREMIAH 38:17-23 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says YHWH God of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘If you will indeed go out to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this city will not be burned with fire, and you and your household will survive. But if you will not go out to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given over to the hand of the Chaldeans; and they will burn it with fire, and you yourself will not escape from their hand.’” Then King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I dread the Jews who have gone over to the Chaldeans, for they may give me over into their hand and they will abuse me.” But Jeremiah said, “They will not give you over. Please obey YHWH in what I am saying to you, that it may go well with you and you may live. But if you keep refusing to go out, this is the word which YHWH has shown me: ‘Then behold, all of the women who have been left in the palace of the king of Judah are going to be brought out to the officers of the king of Babylon; and those women will say, “Your close friends have misled and overpowered you; While your feet were sunk in the mire, they turned back.” They will also bring out all your wives and your sons to the Chaldeans, and you yourself will not escape from their hand, but will be seized by the hand of the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned with fire.’” 10
CUT OFF FROM HIS PEOPLE ▪ But an uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant. (GEN 17:4) ▪ Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. (EXO 31:14) ▪ Any person who eats any blood, even that person shall be cut off from his people. (LEV 7:27) ▪ For whoever does any of these abominations, those persons who do so shall be cut off from among their people. (LEV 18:29) ▪ But the person who does anything defiantly, whether he is native or an alien, that one is blaspheming YHWH; and that person shall be cut off from among his people. (NUM 15:30) ▪ Because he has despised the word of YHWH and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; his guilt will be on him. (NUM 15:31) 11
PSALM 78:1-8 Listen, O my people, to my instruction; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us. We will not conceal them from their children, But tell to the generation to come the praises of YHWH, And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done. For He established a testimony in Jacob And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers That they should teach them to their children, That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, That they may arise and tell them to their children, That they should put their confidence in God And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments, And not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not prepare its heart And whose spirit was not faithful to God. 12
PSALM 135:1-4 Halleluiah! Give praise to the name ofYHWH! Servants ofYHWH, give praise! You who stand in the house ofYHWH, in the courtyards of the house of our God, Halleluiah! forYHWH is good; sing to his name, because it is pleasant. ForYAH chose Jacob for himself, Israel as his own unique treasure. 13
PROVERBS 3:1-19 My son, don’t forget my teaching, keep my commands in your heart; for they will add to you many days, years of life and peace. Do not let grace and truth leave you — bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. Trust inYHWH with all your heart; do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him; then He will level your paths. Don’t be conceited about your own wisdom; but fear YHWH, and turn from evil. This will bring health to your body and give strength to your bones. HonorYHWH with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your income. 14
