ACADEMIC OVERVIEW OF VETERINARY MEDICINE PROGRAM Stage 1 and 2 – pre-clinical Every year has a years studying modules Consists of labs, tutorials, professional growth 5 year programme such as Cell Biology, module covering aspects lectures, placements Abdominal and Pelvis, of professionalism Animal Husbandry Stage 3 – pathobiology, Stage 4 – introduction to Stage 5 – clinical based pharmacology, gastro- clinical modules such as year completing rotations intestinal and clinical Anaesthesia, Neurology in the Vet Hospital respiratory systems

WHAT IS EMS? Pre-clinical – 12 weeks including 2 weeks each in equine, beef, dairy, sheep Clinical – 24 weeks of seeing practice in vet practices including 4 weeks small animal, 4 weeks large animal, 2 weeks of equine with a week in a meat plant Both can be done Internationally – at your own costs Useful experience of seeing cases ‘live’ and valuable to have some ‘hands-on’ experience outside the classroom. A lot of students have taken up jobs from practices that they have been too as a student.
CAO Points for 2019 – 567* Leaving Certificate: ENTRY H5 Chemistry REQUIREMENTS O6/H7 in English, Irish, Mathematics, a third FOR DN300 language and one other recognised subject (VETERINARY Work experience MEDICINE) *Biology at Leaving Certificate is not required but it is strongly recommended *Not all students received an offer
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT Undergraduate students applying through the CAO system will be required to • demonstrate that they have acquired at least 60 hours practical experience relevant to animal handling between 1 February, 2018, and 31st July, 2021. • This must include experience with at least two of the following four animal categories: • Pets • Horses • Farm Animals • Wildlife/Zoos • Animal categories will only be considered if you have a minimum of 5 hours experience.
