Trinity CE Primary School: Presentation of Written Work Policy Trinity CE Primary School Living, Learning, Growing Together Presentation of Written Work Policy This policy refle cts the school’s ethos and vision statements, both of which can be found in the school prospectus. 1 Rationale To ensure that all written work is presented in a neat, clear and appropriate manner, and to have consistency throughout the school. The children will work towards consistently achieving the following by the end of Key Stage 2. 2 English In English lessons teachers will use the school’s agreed style of handwriting to model any writing on the board. In books, the children (except Reception) should write the date on the top line, on the left from margin. It should be written in full e.g.15th May 2015 WALT: ( We Are Learning To) to be written at the top of work and work completed immediately below. If a worksheet is being used, the name of the child and date should be written on the top left hand corner and when marked, either stuck neatly into book or put into a sheet folder Numbers for exercise should be written in the margin with a dot (no circles). A suitable amount of space should be allowed before starting a new piece of work. In many cases this will be a new page. Speech marks/ inverted commas should be formed as “…” above the line. Children should begin indented paragraphs approximately 2cm in from the margin. They should not miss lines to begin new paragraphs, but start on the next line down. Any appropriate tests should be completed at the back of the English book or in the Tests Book. 2
Trinity CE Primary School: Presentation of Written Work Policy 3 Mathematics A margin could be drawn down the side of the page in KS2 where appropriate. In books, the date should be written on the top line, from the left and in the short form eg 15/5/06. WALT: to be written at the top of work and work written immediately below. All work will be in pencil. Children to be reminded to use a sharp pencil. A ruler should be used for drawing lines at all times. Depending on the size of square used in maths books, children should be encouraged to write their numbers or symbols using the squares appropriately for the size of their writing. In KS2 one or two squares should be left between and underneath calculations. Children should be taught how to lay out their sums and written methods according to the Maths Scheme of Work. Other subjects/ activities All written subjects will follow the same guidelines as are in the English section. Guidelines, appropriate to age, should be used to assist children write in straight lines and to space out their work appropriately, when using plain paper. All diagrams, pictures, graphs and tables will be drawn in pencil. Rulers will be used for all straight lines in tables, charts and for lines from labels. Pencil crayon (or felt tips/ wax crayons when agreed by the teacher) should be used for colouring. Children in KS2 to use presentation scrap books for all topic work. 5 Conclusion It is important to teach all children the techniques and strategies for presentation but by Year 5/6 we expect children to set out work independently, appropriately and using the above as a guide. All children will endeavour to set out their work as stated in the policy whenever possible and appropriate. The policy should be read in conjunction with the Marking and Handwriting policy. 3
