What is Big Picture? The Big Picture Learning design is a dynamic approach to learning, doing, and thinking that has been changing the lives of students, educators, and entire communities since 1995. All of the components of the design are based on three foundational principles: first, that learning must be based on the interests and goals of each student; second, that a student’s curriculum must be relevant to people and places that exist in the real world; finally, that a student’s abilities must be authentically measured by the quality of her or his work. The 5 Learning Goals Big Picture Learning believes that high school graduates must know how to reason, problem-solve, and be active members of the community. There are 5 Learning Goals: ✦ Empirical Reasoning ✦ Quantitative Reasoning ✦ Communication ✦ Social Reasoning ✦ Personal Qualities
Big Picture Distinguishers Big Picture Learning schools are unique environments where students can flourish as individuals within a community of learners. There are many elements within our learning design that are uncommon and distinct, and set Big Picture schools apart from most schools. These include: • Advisory • Personalised Learning and Learning Plans (ILP) • Learning in the Real World - Learning Through Internships (LTI) • Assessment and feedback • Families are enrolled • Connected to the community • Creating Futures

The ‘Ideal’ Learner The developers of Big Picture Education have created this design for any learner - one student at a time in a community of learners . Ideally, you should have a keen interest to learn , be able to work fairly independently and within your team. Also, you need to be ‘ work ready ’ - that is, be able to be at an appropriate workplace and demonstrate mature skills However, your parents are enrolled too. A supportive family will allow the learner to excel. This includes a twice a term commitment to coming to the College for ILP Development and Exhibition. We also ask families to participate in Shadow Days, if possible, and transporting of the students to their LTIs. There will also be Subject Levy. The Application Process There are 3 stages to the application process: 1. Talk as a family about being a part of this Pathway 2. Complete and Submit the Application Form [available from this evening and from the College website] The Application Form is due to Mrs Faye Capewell by the 30th August 2013 3.
