Presentation Overview TIA Overview TIA Engineering Committee TR-45 Overview TIA Subcommittee TR-45.2 Overview TIA TR-45.2 Ad-Hoc Emergency Services Activities Questions/Challenges 2
TIA Overview TIA Website : www.tiaonline.org TIA facilitates business development and a competitive market environment for its 700 member companies through: Domestic and international advocacy – Market development and marketing data – Trade Shows (domestic and international) – – Standards Development and Secretariat Services TIA is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) 5 th largest ASDO measured by number of ANSs – Standards projects and technical documents – Formulated according to guidelines established in the Association's ANSI-approved Engineering Manual. Potential projects initiated by a technical contribution to a TR/FO or subcommittee – • Request creation of a new standard or technical document in a particular area of technology TIA has more than 1,000 standards/specifications published 3 For over a decade, TIA and other sectors of EIA together are the 2nd largest SDO after ASTM – (measured by ANSs)
TIA Engineering Committee TR-45 TR-45 Mobile and Personal Communications Systems [Cheryl Blum, Lucent Technologies, Chair] Develops performance, compatibility, interoperability and service standards for mobile and personal communications systems Comprised of 6 Subcommittees and several ad-hoc groups 4
Subcommittee TR-45.2 TR-45.2 Wireless Intersystem Technology – Mobile and Personal Communications Standards [Lewis Milton, Motorola, Chair] To develop service definition and network interface standards for support of interoperability and intersystem operations, for interfaces between those network elements that comprise the infrastructure, in support of seamless service to wireless subscribers, other mobile and personal communication network systems, auxiliary systems, and to other networks. 5
TR-45.2 Ad-Hoc Emergency Services TR-45.2 Ad-Hoc Emergency Services Group (AHES) [Larry A. Young, Sprint Nextel, Chair] Joint effort between TIA TR-45.2 AHES and ATIS WTSC (formerly T1P1) to develop Emergency Services Standards – J-STD-034 “Wireless Enhanced Emergency Services PSAP Perspective” (December 1997) – J-STD-036-B “Enhanced Wireless 9-1-1 Phase 2” (June 2005) 6
Emergency Services Summary Emergency Services Summary J-STD-034 supports the US FCC Phase I Enhanced Wireless 911 mandate J-STD-036 supports the US FCC Phase II mandate, along with emerging wireless carrier/Public Safety Assistance Point (PSAP) requirements All major public wireless technologies used in the USA are supported 7
IP-Based Emergency Services IP-Based Emergency Services A Stage 1 Requirements Document is being developed for All-IP-Network Emergency Call Support in 3GPP2 S.R0115. – This will result in the development of TIA standards – This will allow wireless VoIP and multimedia users to make emergency calls – This will provide similar capabilities for IP-based services as are provided by J-STD-036 in the circuit world 8
Questions/Challenges Questions/Challenges Are there additional requirements for the USA operators? The specification developed by 3GPP2 may require substantial updates to comply with USA requirements. Will the standard for IP-Based Emergency Services be a joint project of TIA TR-45.2 AHES and ATIS WTSC? 9
