FNAL Calorimeter and Precision Timing Generic R&D Future Jim Freeman FNAL Detector R&D Review Oct 29, 2014
P5 Report Recommendations • Recommendation 27 : “Focus resources toward directed instrumentation R&D in the near-term for high-priority projects. As the technical challenges of current high-priority projects are met, restore to the extent possible a balanced mix of short-term and long- term R&D.” • Recommendation 28: “Strengthen university -national laboratory partnerships in instrumentation R&D through investment in instrumentation at universities. Encourage graduate programs with a focus on instrumentation education at HEP supported universities and laboratories, and fully exploit the unique capabilities and facilities offered at each.” 2 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
Main Themes • We feel we have a balanced plan that utilizes our strengths • Largely we see a continuation of the current activities • An important opportunity for calorimetry and timing is the CMS Phase II upgrade. For the ECAL two technologies: HGCAL, Shashlik. Some HE rebuild will be involved in either option. Down select will be in Feb 2015. • FNAL wants to maximize its contribution to the Phase II calorimeter R&D. We will continue HE rebuild R&D at full speed and continue timing layer R&D. We will ramp up on more specific R&D for the endcap replacement calorimeter when the path is clear. 3 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
HE Rebuild • Continue new scintillator development • WLS Fiber R&D • Participate in radiation hardness measurements and testbeam eval • Develop “smart megatile ” concept to create integrated scintillator/SIPM mechanical package. 4 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
Shashlik • Develop QIE13 conceptual design suitable for a 10%/sqrt(E) calorimeter. We note this would be suitable for CMS barrel ECAL upgrade as well. • WLS Fiber R&D • Electro-mechanical-thermal concepts for “SIPM” located on Shashlik • Participate in next generation “SIPM” development, GaIP, radiation damage and evaluation of optical transducers for Shashlik. Techniques for extending dynamic range of SIPM-like devices. • Fast Timing Layer 5 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
HGCAL • Participate in thermal engineering studies needed for HGCAL design • Use FNAL expertise to develop concept of HGCAL readout chip. More of new direction than Shashlik • Fast Timing Layer 6 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
New Scintillator Development • Collaboration: FNAL/Iowa/Maryland • Study promising rad-hard materials. – PEN – Polysiloxanes – Liquid scintillators 7 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
WLS Fiber Development • Collaboration: FNAL/Iowa/Fairfield/INFN/TTU/Caltech/ND • Study quartz capillary fibers • Participate in organic doped low temperature glass fibers • Participate in radiation and testbeam evaluations 8 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
Smart Megatile for HE Rebuild • Conceptual design of calorimeter “Megatile” with SIPMs at outer boundary, differential analog signals sent to “RBX” for signal summing, digitization, readout. • Local temperature stabilization of SIPMs using Peltiers. Local BV generation. • Development on previous works for CMS calorimetry and Calice. 9 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
Mechanical Engineering support for CMS phase II downselect calorimeter • FNAL has very strong ME group. • Two areas of contribution: – Mechanical-thermal conceptual design work on HGCAL – Mechanical-structural conceptual design work on Shashlik • After the downselect we will coordinate with global CMS on details of scope. 10 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
Strengthen University-FNAL Collaboration • Hold ~10% of cal-fast timing budget unallocated. Use for university-initiated complimentary proposals. For example proposals that would need FNAL expertise like thin film, optics preparation, other ideas where FNAL could help. Mostly SWF, some M&S. 11 Jim Freeman | Calorimeter and Timing R&D Future 10/28/2014
