Thesis Question | How can Biophilic Design be used in higher education to increase concentration and build a productive learning environment for students? CDES 4721 Sarah Lafrinere Thesis & Exhibition Lisa Abendroth
Thesis Intent | Biophilia explores the relationship between psychological well-being and the environments in which we inhabit. The connection between emotion and design has become increasingly prominent and the qualities of Biophilic design is ever more important. Theorists, researchers, and designers are working to prove that people have an innate attraction towards the natural environment over the built environment. There are proven benefjts for in - corporating Biophilic design specifjcally in an educational environment. While it is not realistic to extend higher education to only outdoor environments, we are able to bring aspects of nature indoors. The patterns of nature create blossoming environments and provide a framework for our visual connections and sensory. Currently, we are focused on creating schools at a low cost and not focused on the health of our students and teachers. A classroom is a place where we extend knowledge and shape future leaders. It is crucial that we do our best to support the growth and intellectual well-being of those future leaders. Biophilic design encourages learning while promoting healthy behavior changes and we need it in higher education. CDES 4721 Sarah Lafrinere Thesis & Exhibition Lisa Abendroth
