  12. Post-College Bio Ph.D. in Mathematics (Rutgers University 2008) organized summer research program for math majors for 3 summers Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 3 / 11

  13. Post-College Bio Ph.D. in Mathematics (Rutgers University 2008) organized summer research program for math majors for 3 summers lots of teaching Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 3 / 11

  14. Post-College Bio Ph.D. in Mathematics (Rutgers University 2008) organized summer research program for math majors for 3 summers lots of teaching lots of conferences (and travel paid for by giving talks about math!) Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 3 / 11

  15. Post-College Bio Ph.D. in Mathematics (Rutgers University 2008) organized summer research program for math majors for 3 summers lots of teaching lots of conferences (and travel paid for by giving talks about math!) returned to Valpo as a faculty member in Fall 2008 Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 3 / 11

  16. What makes Valpo special? personal attention 1 colloquium experience 2 research program 3 Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 4 / 11

  17. Personal Attention Professors get to know you individually. Math major classes can be as small as 4–5 students. Professors help individual students get involved in activities that highlight their strengths. Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 5 / 11

  18. What is colloquium? All Mathematics majors participate in the colloquium to learn to use mathematical writing software and to give mathematical talks. Computer Science majors take CS 493 (Seminar in Professional Practices) as a parallel experience. Actuarial Science majors take ACRS 325 (Actuarial Modeling) as a parallel experience. Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 6 / 11

  19. Pros of Colloquium This might sound scary at first, but there are a number of pros! Get to know other math and computer science majors. Get to know math faculty members. Practice giving talks. Practice writing technical papers. Learn about interesting topics. Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 7 / 11

  20. Research at Valpo What is Research? Solve a math problem no one has solved before. Design an algorithm to solve a problem in a new way. Collect real world data and use it to develop a new hypothesis or theory. Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 8 / 11

  21. Research at Valpo What is Research? Solve a math problem no one has solved before. Design an algorithm to solve a problem in a new way. Collect real world data and use it to develop a new hypothesis or theory. Who does research at Valpo? All math/cs/actuarial science majors are invited! Students of all backgrounds participate. Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 8 / 11

  22. My Research Experience Freshman year 1 “shapes of constant diameter” worked with Christy (math/English major) gave a talk at a state-wide math conference Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 9 / 11

  23. My Research Experience Freshman year 1 “shapes of constant diameter” worked with Christy (math/English major) gave a talk at a state-wide math conference Sophomore–Senior years 2 “graphs of essentially equivalent lattice paths” published 2 papers in math journals Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 9 / 11

  24. My Research Experience Freshman year 1 “shapes of constant diameter” worked with Christy (math/English major) gave a talk at a state-wide math conference Sophomore–Senior years 2 “graphs of essentially equivalent lattice paths” published 2 papers in math journals Senior year (again!) 3 “cover pebbling” worked with Betsy (French major, now CSR), Paul (Chemistry major), Tammy (math/cs major, now computer programmer) published 1 paper in math journal Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 9 / 11

  25. Current Projects Professor Crawford (statistics) teaching load went down at Valpo a couple years ago collected course evaluation data from before and after change studied if the data were statistically different Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 10 / 11

  26. Current Projects Professor Crawford (statistics) teaching load went down at Valpo a couple years ago collected course evaluation data from before and after change studied if the data were statistically different Professor Desjarlais (math education) surveying middle school students on attitudes about problem solving and math competitions will compare how students attitudes are different by gender Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 10 / 11

  27. Current Projects Professor Crawford (statistics) teaching load went down at Valpo a couple years ago collected course evaluation data from before and after change studied if the data were statistically different Professor Desjarlais (math education) surveying middle school students on attitudes about problem solving and math competitions will compare how students attitudes are different by gender Professor Caristi (computer science) “catch the cat” game how to make the cat smarter? how to make the human smarter? under what circumstances are there winning strategies for either the cat or the player? Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 10 / 11

  28. Pros of the Valpo research experience research program is built for all majors, regardless of focus or future plans! experience real-world problem solving experience with technical writing/presentations opportunities to travel for presentations Lara Pudwell (VU Math & CS) My Valpo Story February 18, 2011 11 / 11
